Yeovil Town Under-18s Head Coach Mark Challen has confirmed via social media that he has departed the club.

Writing on Instagram via his coaching company’s account “M1 Coaching” he confirmed that Wednesday was his final day.

He wrote; “Sadly, today (Wednesday) was my last game at Yeovil Town FC.”

He thanked all those who had made his time at Yeovil special during a nine-year stint with the club.

At time of writing, there has been no confirmation as to who will take over the running of the Under-18s.

First- team squad members Toby Stephens and Ollie Haste have both represented Challen’s side this season with Alfie Lloyd, who departed the Under-18s for QPR last season among those who thanked their coach in the comments.

There’s a double reason to celebrate at Huish Park this week with both Matt Worthington and Darren Sarll picking up awards and recognition.

Midfielder, Worthington has been singled out for praise by his manager on more than one recent occasion and it seems others are starting to notice.

The former Bournemouth man made both the Non-League paper and the official Vanarama Team of the Day for his part in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Barnet.

As for the gaffer, he’s been rewarded as the National League’s Manager of the Month for guiding his side through three incredible away wins at Dagenham, Bromley and Wrexham and remaining unbeaten through FA Cup and Somerset Premier Cup ties too.

The official press release stated;
Yeovil Town weren’t slow to start brewing this season but their cup ran cold just a few days into September.

Darren Sarll never allowed some sticky results to distract from the bigger picture – and his team really started to get going again last month.

They begun November with a 5-0 FA Cup romp at Yate Town before points were earned with wins over Eastleigh, Dagenham, Bromley and Wrexham.

They may not have been able to polish off winless Dover Athletic but the Glovers fans and the Manager of the Month have their eyes firmly fixed on the top seven now.”

As an aside, we here at the Gloverscast can only find THREE FIVE* occasions where the Yeovil manager has been rewarded with the monthly gong since the start of the EFL era. If anyone knows of any awards prior to 2003 or if I’ve missed one, please get in touch – ben@gloverscast.co.uk

● GARY JOHNSON – LEAGUE TWO – SEPTEMBER 2003

● GARY JOHNSON – LEAGUE TWO – SEPTEMBER 2004

● GARY JOHNSON – LEAGUE TWO – DECEMBER 2004

● DARREN SARLL – NATIONAL LEAGUE – SEPTEMBER 2019

● DARREN SARLL – NATIONAL LEAGUE – NOVEMBER 2021

A huge congratulations to both for their well deserved recognition!!

*EDITORS NOTE,
Originally, I only found three other examples of Yeovil Managers winning Manager of the month since 2003, but, Ciderspace OG, Huish Hugh spotted a gap in the Wikipedia history (imagine!) on the subject and pointed out two more Gary Johnson awards that probably lay atop his mantlepiece.

Happy to stand corrected.

Highlights of Saturday’s 1-0 down win over Barnet are now available on the club’s YouTube channel.

The game was won by a ninth minute header from striker Adi Yussuf with the visitors to Huish Park  ending the game with ten men after the dismissal of winter Ephron Mason-Clark in the 87th minute.

Ben, Dave and Ian are back to talk about the win against Barnet, Scotty’s deadline day and more.

Thanks for listening!

Yeovil Town Under-18s went down to a 3-0 defeat at Bridgwater United in the Gary Else League Cup on Saturday.

The young Glovers conceded three times in the last 20 minutes  at the Bridgwater & Taunton College Sports Zone against the leaders of the South West Counties Youth League.

The result means they finish second in their competition group and face the winners of the other group which is down to the under-18s sides of either Torquay United or Wimborne Town on January 8.

Yeovil are back in league action at the Alvington Playing Fields against Swindon Supermarine Under-18s next Saturday (10:30am kick-off).

Barnet manager Dean Brennan accused referee Ryan Atkin of “lies” after claiming he sent off Ephron Mason-Clark at Huish Park yesterday.

He said the official had told him the winger had headbutted a Yeovil player in an off-the-ball incident in the 87th minute of the game settled by a ninth-minute Adi Yussuf goal.

Brennan and his entire coaching staff were then yellow carded by Atkin for their protests about the dismissal.

In a clear violation of Rule  1 of the Gloverscast, the manager said: “We had a player sent off for nothing, for one of their players squaring up to our player and inciting our player. Nothing happened.

“If they tell me that Ephron butted him, they are lying because I watched the whole incident and nothing happened.

“I watched it. It’s lies. I watched the whole incident, everyone on the bench watched it, (Barnet goalkeeping coach) Dave Anderson watched it and I asked him ‘are my eyes deceiving me?’

“He came over and booked lots of us for complaining about the sending off which he said was a headbutt. To me that’s a lie because I didn’t see a headbutt and I watched the whole incident.”

Brennan said the club would appeal if they could get footage of the incident and, having seen it appear on social media on Sunday, there’s a fair chance of a successful appeal.

The Barnet boss added  that a Yeovil player had committed “the clearest handball you have ever seen in your life” in the final minute of the game – but said Yeovil deserved all three points.

He added: “I thought Yeovil were good, they deserved to win that game, the damage was done in the first ten minutes when they started well and scored in that period.

“I’m not blaming the referee for us losing today, I thought the better team beat us but to send Ephron off was ridiculous.

The referee handed out five yellow cards (not including the visitors’ bench!) with four coming for Yeovil and one for Barnet.

You can read Ian’s view of the match and the officiating – here.

A 1-0 win over Barnet in miserable conditions with a referee who wanted to be centre of attention was far from a classic, but it did move Yeovil to within two points of the play-off places with a game in hand over many teams above them.

Here are Ian’s Five Conclusions on an eleventh match unbeaten….

Dale Gorman’s importance to this team is understated. I touched on this during last Monday’s

podcast. Like many of this team, Gorman has taken a bit of time to make his mark but he’s well and truly doing it now. His assist for Yussuf was a deliciously-flighted cross to the back post with his weaker foot and it invited the Tanzanian to head home. He played, in match where he really had to concentrate, on a yellow card from the 22nd minute. He moves the ball nicely, keeps the game flowing and he has the edge that Darren Sarll likes his players to have. We can’t afford to be without him, and I think if we were to lose him for a game or two, we’d really notice his absence.

That FA Cup atmosphere wasn’t there. What a difference seven days make. A gate of 2024 (with 98 away fans) meant there were less than 2000 Yeovil Town supporters in the ground. That electrifying atmosphere wasn’t there. There’s a new variant in town which might ruin Christmas, thus people could be taking extra precautions, but this is an in-form team without a loss in 11 matches who are on the verge of the playoff positions and in the 3rd Round of the FA Cup. We all know what needs to happen, though.

As matches go, this wasn’t the most enthralling. It was pretty bleak conditions at Huish Park, with two teams looking to break each other down. Barnet were restricted by our ever-resilient defensive unit and our huff and puff attack didn’t create many clear cut chances. It made for a rather drab affair which was made entertaining (apologies for the Rule #1 break here) by a referee who insisted on being the centre of attention. Ephram Mason-Clark’s red card and the subsequent booking of four members of the Barnet coaching team was the pièce de resistance of refereeing performance art from Ryan Atkin.

We should have killed the game off. Yussuf’s opener was the perfect start, and our performance in the first

part of the match suggested we might do something special. As it happened, things evened out and it was a tough game. While we didn’t create and clear cut opportunities at goal, there were moments when we could have put the game to bed. Worthington teed up Gorman centrally, on the edge of the box, but Gorman miscontrolled and couldn’t get a shot away. Knowles could have put Lo-Everton in on goal but didn’t get his pass right. Lo-Everton was put through by Yussuf and worked a decent effort into the side-netting. Those moments would make things a little less stressful if they resulted in goals.

We are unreal at defending. I don’t recall ever being comfortable with Yeovil Town defending a one goal advantage. Come to think of it, I don’t recall being comfortable with Yeovil Town defending a two goal advantage either. But, this lot can defend. Luke

Wilkinson, Max Hunt, Dan Moss, Morgan Williams and Josh Staunton were the obvious standouts in their defensive duties yesterday. But the  way Yussuf, Wakefield, Lo-Everton, Worthington and Gorman press is a real difference maker. We know this team work hard for each other, but the confidence they’ve given supporters when we’re 1-0 up is remarkable.

Yeovil Town midfielder Matt Worthington spoke to BBC Somerset’s Sheridan Robins following the Glovers’ 1-0 win over Barnet on Saturday.

Following praise from his manager both before and after the game, the former Bournemouth man was in great spirits at both the team’s form and his own contribution.

Worthington has started ten out of the eleven matches which make up the unbeaten run with the only exception being the Somerset Premier Cup victory at Larkhall Athletic.

“I am enjoying it, liking getting in the box and making some chances and we have a really good balance in there with (Josh) Staunton and (Dale) Gorman.
“Staunts settles the ship and feeds me and Gorman and we try and feed the strikers, so it is a good balance.

“In front of home fans, they come out and support us, the three points is important and a clean sheet is massive as well, the back four were brilliant again today.

“We are looking up (the table) but we are staying level-headed, we know we have to come in next week, keep putting the hard work in and keep ticking off the games and getting the points on the board.
“Cup competitions and runs are great, but we just want to keep winning so we’ll just be looking to get another result next time out.

He suggested that he was looking forward to the FA Cup tie against his former club, Bournemouth but reiterated that it was a case of ‘one game at a time’ for the in form Glovers.

Defender Mark Little appears to be making progress in his recovery from an injury which has kept him out of contention so far this season.

The former Bristol City man posted a video of him with a ball at his feet in the gym on his Instagram account.

He has not featured since picking up a foot injury in the pre-season friendly against Forest Green Rovers and underwent surgery.

Speaking about Little ahead of the FA Cup tie against Stevenage manager Darren Sarll said he hoped to have the player available for the Boxing Day visit to Torquay United.

Then he was targeting Little having the ball at his feet this week and joining in training the following week suggesting he could be back on the training pitch next week.

Darren Sarll showed his Yeovil Town players a video nasty to ensure a fast start in the 1-0 win over Barnet at Huish Park on Saturday.

The Glovers’ boss said ahead of the game he showed his side the opening of the 1-1 draw at home to bottom-of-the-table Dover Athletic a fortnight ago.

In that match, a goal from TJ Bramble saw the visitors take the lead after just two minutes.

Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Sheridan Robins, the manager described the start against Barnet, capped by a ninth-minute goal from striker Adi Yussuf, as the best he has seen in his time at the club.

He said: “I played them (a video) of the Dover start yesterday to make the point that this is how bad it can look, let’s make sure we start on the right foot.

“I also spoke to them heavily about motivation after the FA Cup game because when the telly is here and you are playing an EFL side players organically motivate themselves, it’s when it’s a drab December evening with no cameras here that teams can struggle.

“So we spoke about that at length (on Friday) and Terry (Skiverton, assistant manager) came in after the warm-up and said ‘they are ready to go now’.

“He was right because that was the best start we have had to a game in my three years here definitely.

As you would expect from a team which has gone 11 matches unbeaten, the manager was full of praise for his side who have kept eight clean sheets in that run.

Sarll picked out his entire defence for praise and described a late block by midfielder Josh Staunton as “almost like scoring a goal” and the effort of Matt Worthington as “spectacular.”

He added: “We are very much enjoying the run and we know we have to work hard to keep going.”

Worthington added that fast starts were part of the game plan Yeovil had adopted this season.

He told BBC Somerset: “We go out and try and get our tempo in the first 15 minutes, get that first goal and our legs and our power takes over from there.

“It is a brilliant run we are on and the lads are really buying in to what we are trying to do and how we are trying to play.
