Latest Yeovil Town News (Page 72)

Yeovil play at Huish Park for the first time in a month on Saturday as they host relegation threatened Wealdstone.

Form Guide…

The home side comes into the game off the back of some poor performances, having not won in eight games.

Last time out the Glovers faced an out of form Dagenham & Redbridge but went 1-0 down early on. However, Brett McGavin saved the day when equalising just before halftime. If things don’t improve Mark Cooper will have some difficult questions to answer.

Yeovil taking on Dagenham & Redbridge

For Wealdstone it has been a season of difficulty. Currently sat in 22nd the London club are on a similar run of form to that of Yeovil. With no wins in their last seven, they have won a game more recently than their counterparts on Saturday.

In their last game, The Stones were comfortably beaten by a very good Gateshead side 0-4.

With the form of both teams this will either be a brilliant game of football or very dull.

Key Players…

Yeovil – Brett McGavin

Another week, another McGavin write up on being our key player. At this point we are am running out of things to say about him.

McGavin has been superb in midfield this season. With 15 G/A, he leads the club in goal contributions, ahead of the likes of Aaron Jarvis, Ciaran McGuckin and James Plant.

McGavin not only is an asset going forward but he also is a rock solid midfielder who can do the dirty stuff when needed. He also gets bonus points for a brilliant head of hair.

Wealdstone – Adrian Mariappa

The Jamaican defender joined The Stones in the summer and has been key part of their defence. At 38 years old the centre back has a lot of experience across the football pyramid, including 168 appearances in the Premier league.

Mariappa has led by example using his experience to help guide the team through a difficult season. This experience has also led to him being named Wealdstone captain. The defender has played 26 games so far this season in the league so has shown age is just a number.

He will provide tough opposition for Yeovil’s attacking players.

That’s what he said…

Yeovil boss, Cooper, gave his thoughts to the BBC ahead of the game. He said: It is about 90 minutes and performing and doing the best that we can. You cannot always control the result, but what we do try and do is control our performance.”

Wealdstone manager, Neil Gibson spoke ahead of his sides visit to Huish Park. He said: “The preparation has been really positive.

“Yeovil is a club with Football League history and they will have set their sights on promotion at the start of the season. They’ll be looking to reignite their campaign, but we’ve done our due diligence. We’ve analysed their games and I’ve watched them live a couple of times. We have a game plan and now it’s about execution.”

We’ve met before…

Yeovil and Wealdstone have been very evenly matched since their first meeting in 1974. Since that game Yeovil have gone into win nine games with Wealdstone also winning nine games, the two sides have drawn ten time however.

Last time the two teams met was in October last year when Yeovil won 0-3. That game saw McGavin open the scoring in the 26th minute, with Jarvis bagging the second and McGuckin finishing the off with the third goal.

Don’t I know you…

Craig Eastmond is a player that will a familiar name to the Huish Parl crowd, even if did only make one appearance for the Glovers. This season hasn’t been great for Eastmond having joined from Sutton on a free he has only played in seven games so far this campaign with his last coming against Yeovil in October.

Anthony Georgiou will be another known name. The Cypriot came to Somerset on loan in 2022 for a month, making two appearances. Georgiou has faired better at Wealdstone this year playing 26 times assisting twice.

Who’s been naughty then…

Charlie Cooper is still suspended.

The leader of Somerset Council Bill Revans has  said the authority will “seek to protect” the future of land at Huish Park which is in its ownership.

The authority which took over from South Somerset District Council following a local government reorganisation in April 2023 is the landlord of land Yeovil Town’s stadium sits after the club’s former owner <NAME REDACTED> sold it for £2.8m in May 2022

The club’s current chairman Martin Hellier has an exclusive buy-back clause on the land which expires in May 2026 and recently told a fans’ forum that its long-term ownership was “on the radar” and that any development of the land would benefit the club.

When Mr Revans appeared on BBC Radio Somerset this afternoon to answer questions on a range of topics, the Gloverscast posed one about the future of the land, namely: “As its owner, how does Somerset Council view the future of the land at Huish Park? Is the council committed to the long-term future of the land being used for sports beyond the 2026 exclusivity period that the football club’s owner has on the buy-back of the land?

In reply, Mr Revans said: “I understand the new owner of the club says he wants to buy the land and he has an exclusive option on that buy-back until May 2026. I would hope that comes forward and after that we would have to have negotiations about what was possible to bring that forward, but we want to see Yeovil Town continue to thrive and prosper and one day they may reach their former heights.

A reminder of the core and non-core land at Huish Park.

Following this initial response, BBC Somerset presenter Charlie Taylor posed a follow-up question about what would happen if an offer came in for the land from a group not interested in the site continuing as a football club. He asked: “If someone wanted that land to do something else with it, would the council be in a difficult position given the financial state of affairs? Could you say ‘no’ to such an offer to protect Yeovil Town FC, or would the money take precedence to protect things like social care?

In response, Mr Evans said: “We are getting in to multiple levels of hypothetical situations now, but if anyone came forward with an offer we would have to have a conversation. But, I do not foresee that happening. Yeovil Town in absolute integral to the community of Yeovil, we own a number of sports grounds across the county and fully recognise the importance of our sports clubs to local communities and we would seek to protect them if we at all could. One reason we do everything we can to keep control of local finances is so we can recognise local priorities. If we had commissioners (people sent in to sort out failing councils) appointed by the government, they would not be able to respond to local needs as your caller suggests.

You can listen to Mr Revans in full on the BBC iPlayer – HERE – the question and answer about the land ownership starts at 02:49:00 in to the broadcast.

We think this might be a first for this season, but Yeovil Town fans looking to make the trip to Halifax on Saturday 8th of March CANNOT buy their tickets in advance.

There’s pretty much nothing else we can tell you, all feels a bit simplistic, maybe a bit TOO simplistic?

Yeovil Town manager Mark Cooper has said he is looking to build on last weekend’s draw at Dagenham & Redbridge when his take on Wealdstone at Huish Park this weekend.

A first half goal from midfielder Brett McGavin earned the Glovers a point in East London, a result which defender Morgan Williams said would look like an even better one if they picked up maximum points at home this weekend.

They take on a Wealdstone side which has taken three points from their last six National League Premier matches, one fewer than the Glovers who have drawn four and lost two of their last six matches.

Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Josh Perkins on Thursday, he said: “It is about 90 minutes and performing and doing the best that we can. You cannot always control the result, but what we do try and do is control our performance. It is about clear clarity of thinking, making good decisions under pressure and doing what we do. I think when we get away from controlling games and start booting the ball forward, we’re nowhere near as effective. So it is about us doing what we do, doing it really well and trying to execute that and and getting a positive result.

The manager said there were “a few bumps and bruises” to his squad with midfielder Charlie Cooper, who serves the second of a two-match suspension this weekend, missing alongside Sonny Blu Lo-EvertonCaleb Hughes and striker Aaron Jarvis for the visit from Wealdstone.

After what feels like an eternity, Yeovil are back at home this weekend and welcome struggling Wealdstone to Huish Park

The man in charge for the game is Isaac Searle, an official we have come across before.

This Saturday’s fixture actually represents his first game in charge at National League Premier level this season, he’s only been used in the South.

In 13 games, he’s dished out 63 yellows, a few reds and three penalties. Those penalties have all come in the past four games though.

We saw him just once last season, a 0-0 draw at home to Hampton and Richmond, in December.

We can find no record of his name even being mentioned in our match report on the day, which is usually a good thing even if he did show yellow cards to three Glovers.

Isaac will be assisted by Dean Treleavan and Stuart Kane, James Hooper is on fourth official duties.

Have a good one, gents.

There has been plenty of league action since the defeat at Rochdale, but we don’t care about that, we’re here for Yeovil! The Glovers took a step in the right direction with a 1-1 draw against Dagenham & Redbridge last weekend, let’s see what else happened on a brisk Saturday!

We begin at this Saturday’s opponents Wealdstone, who were thoroughly beaten by Gateshead in a 4-0 drubbing, leaving them three points from safety while Gateshead continued to keep pace in their playoff hunt. Altrincham put an end to Braintree Town’s impressive form, furthering their own good run with a 3-1 win at home, Alex Newby and Regan Linney both scoring and proving why they’re one of the most potent attacking sides in the division. It was far from a warm welcome back for Neal Ardley, as his Woking side were disposed of away at former employers York City, with January signing Josh Stones bagging a hat trick in a 3-0 win.

There were late goals in all three 2-1 scorelines on Saturday, and we’ll start at The New Lawn as Forest Green Rovers continued their title charge with a 2-1 win over Eastleigh, a 90th minute winner becoming a familiar sight for the Gloucestershire side. An 86th minute own goal by Jack Taylor handed Hartlepool United the three points away at Sutton United, while a 101st minute goal from Nathan Tshikuna was only a consolation, as Tamworth lost at home against FC Halifax Town.

The rest of the weekend was a fairly low scoring affair, as Solihull Moors continued their winless start to life under Matt Taylor with a 1-0 defeat at home against Oldham Athletic, and in a big result for the bottom end of the table, Maidenhead United won 1-0 at home against Southend United. Finally, the two lowest place sides frustrated playoff and title contenders respectively, as Ebbsfleet United took a point away from Rochdale, and Boston United sent 10-man Barnet home with a point, both games finishing 0-0. Aldershot Town and AFC Fylde’s fixture was postponed due to a unsafe playing surface.

The Yeovil Town first team were picking up a point away in London, but what of the cohort of players out and about?

We start in the National League South, where defender Jordan Thomas helped his Torquay United side to a huge three points in the hunt for a play-off spot.

The Yellows left it late, but two goals after the 85 minute mark gave them all three points against fellow promotion contenders Eastbourne Borough.

There was also a big clash at the other end of the table where W*ymouth, Will Buse between the sticks, were on the wrong end a 3-1 score line against Chesham. Ex-Glover Brooklyn Genesini with the only goal for the Terras, his third goal in just two games.

Into the  lower leagues, and Sherborne Town had their game called off because of a waterlogged pitch, as did Wellington AFC, which meant empty weekends for Corey Koerner and Jacob Shore.

Down at Bridport, Sol Padmore and George Geraghty were both involved in their 4-2 win over Torridgeside AFC.

Earlier in the week, there was unfortunate news about Yeovil youngster Nansimir Nanev, who suffered a bad injury of Boxing Day, his loan club Sturminster Newton confirmed he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and will be out for a while.

We join Sturminster in wishing Nanev a swift recovery.

Yeovil Town Manager Mark Cooper has challenged his players to turn Saturday’s draw against Dagenham into a ‘good point’ by beating Wealdstone on Saturday.

Speaking to BBC Radio Somerset’s Josh Perkins, the gaffer admitted there was a bit of low confidence within the group, but that the draw could be a base to build on for the coming weeks.

“I think when you have a little bit of low confidence it affects the group and you make decisions that you wouldn’t usually make, and we give fouls away, or we should play the ball forward and we don’t, or we don’t pick up the right men that throw-in for the goal.

So when you’re in that moment, it’s about small little building blocks and getting a point on the road. And then, that’s only a good point if we go and win our home game next Saturday. But players tried their socks off. Of course, we can play better but I’m pleased with the point to come out in the end for sure. Brilliant following again from the Yeovil [fans], from the Green Army again and they helped us hang on for that point at the end.”

Brett McGavin tapped in from close ranger after Nathan Harvey had saved the original spot kick to draw the Glovers level following Josh Rees’ opener.

“It was a clear penalty, wasn’t it? And Brett obviously took the responsibility, and it was heart in the mouth, wasn’t it? But luckily the ball bounced back for him and he put it away.”

Brett McGavin cannot believe it (Pic C/O Gary Brown)

The Glovers grew into the game after an opening few moments which left a bit to be desired.

“We spoke about the 1st 20 minutes playing everything forward. Because they’re not in good form at home and we wanted to make them defend early and face their own goal.
So, all we’d worked on in training, was to play everything forward and get them running towards their own goal and then one of our best performers of the season tries three drag backs, passes it backwards, we end up kicking out for a throw-in and we concede.”

“So, as much as you talk about it, it’s pressure, it makes you make poor decisions.
But, the players, again, have given everything and it was a rocky first few minutes, but I always felt we’d get back into it.”

The result means the Glovers are now eight without a win, but Cooper thinks that the result might be something to build on after a frustrating run.

“We haven’t lost that many. We should have beat Ebbsfleet, we should have beat Woking, we should have beat Gateshead, we should have beat Eastleigh so coulda, woulda, shoulda. But, as long as the players keep trying hard and we’ll be fine.

There was a final word for the supporters in the away end, 311 made the journey today – one of the best away followings in the league – who are we to argue?

“Fantastic, as always. We have one of the best away followings in the league, it was really good, in that least ten minutes, we’re trying to make subs, they cheered us on, we had to take [James] Planty off, he’s coming back from a hamstring [injury], we didn’t want that to go, Sean McGurk has been really ill, so we managed to get him on and get him a few minutes, so in the last 10 minutes we managed to see a bit of pressure off and come back with a point.”
