Match Report

Yeovil Town made it three National League wins in a row and extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to seven games yesterday evening as they overcame Bromley 2-1 at Hayes Lane.

Tom Knowles opened the scoring on 18 minutes to put Town ahead but Bromley equalised just before half time from the penalty spot.

Charlie Wakefield then put Yeovil back in front just moments later with a thunderous strike and Yeovil were able to withstand some late pressure from Bromley to return home with three points.

First half

Darren Sarll made one enforced change to the side that beat Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday as the suspended Dale Gorman was replaced by Sonny Blu Lo-Everton.

Yeovil kicked off towards the terraced end.

The home side made the brighter start of the two teams but the opening 15 minutes or so were fairly tame.

Out of nowhere Yeovil took the lead on 18 minutes as Sonny Blu Lo-Everton capitalised on a defensive mistake from former Yeovil Town defender Omar Sowunmi which allowed him to find Knowles who’s shot found the bottom corner. I should point out at this stage of the report – I didn’t actually see the goal as I was using the toilet facilities at the time – but I was reliably informed by the people around me that it was a cracking strike – apparently the best they’d ever seen!

Shortly afterwards Bromley won their first corner of the game on the left hand side which was crossed to the outside of the box and Yeovil gave away a free kick for handball in a dangerous position. The shot was deflected off the wall and out for another corner on the left hand side which was taken short but Bromley gave away a foul.

Yeovil won their first corner on 35 minutes on the right hand side which was taken short and then crossed into the center of the box but the ball was headed just wide.

Just before half time Bromley were given a way back into the game as they were awarded a penalty on 45 minutes. It was unclear as to what the penalty was given for but the Yeovil players weren’t aggrieved to see the referee point to the spot. Michael Cheek stepped up and slotted the ball past Grant Smith‘s left to pull the game level again.

Similarly to the game at Dagenham on Saturday – just when it looked like Yeovil would go in at the break all square they took the lead again. This time Charlie Wakefield found loads of space outside the Bromley penalty area and unleashed a cracking shot that flew into the top corner of the net. Apparently the first goal was even better – unfortunately I cannot be the judge of that!

Half time: Bromley 1 Yeovil Town 2

Bromley made a double substitution at half-time as Jude Arthurs was replaced by Liam Trotter and Louis Dennis was replaced by James Alabi.

It was always going to be a nervy second half for Yeovil. Playing away from home to a team that had gone 12 game unbeaten was never going to be an easy task. We had a slim advantage and needed to ensure that if we were to walk away from Hayes Lane with the win we’d have to put in an excellent shift in the second 45 minutes.

On 50 minutes Bromley won a corner on the right hand side which was crossed to the far post but Yeovil were able to defend the ball away.

Seven minutes later Yeovil were almost in dreamland as they very nearly increased their lead. Yeovil won a free kick just outside the are and Luke Wilkinson’s effort beat Mark Cousins but cannoned off the crossbar.

On 65 minutes Bromley won a succession of corners but on both occasions Yeovil were able to deal with the danger.

With 20 minutes left to play Bromley made their final substitution as George Alexander was replaced by Jack Cawley.

One minute later Bromley spurned a good chance to equalise as Omar Sowunmi put a low cross into the box which found Michael Cheek in the six yard box but he was unable to make a clean strike on the ball and Yeovil could breathe a sigh of relief.

Yeovil made their first substitution on 73 minutes as Tom Knowles was replaced by Morgan Williams.

The final 15 minutes saw Bromley dominate the game with Yeovil performing backs to the wall defending.

On 86 minutes Grant Smith came to Yeovil’s rescue as he was able to somehow hook the ball off the goal line from Omar Sowunmi’s header and protect Yeovil’s advantage.

Yeovil made their second and final substitution on 88 minutes as Sonny Blu Lo-Everton was replaced by Alex Bradley.

Five minutes of time was added on and after what felt like five years the referee blew the final whistle and Yeovil could celebrate a superb victory in front of the travelling support.

The Disabled Supporters Association are raising funds to purchase two evacuation chairs for Huish Park.

There is a JustGiving page here where you can contribute. The DSA has a target of £3000 which will buy two new chairs, one for each end of Main Stand.

On the page the story says: “The purpose of these chairs is to evacuate anyone out of the building in the event of a fire. On a match day we have 6/7 wheelchair users watching the game from upstairs from our box. The accessible lift would not be an option in the event of a fire, so these chairs are essential to everyone’s safety not just on a matchday but anybody with mobility issues wishing to access the first floor of YTFC.”

The Yeovil Town fc DSA was set up to help disabled football fans both home and away visiting Huish Park by a group of fans that support the mighty greens. Over the years we have held several fundraising events to purchase things from wheelchairs , ponchos , blankets and radios.

We help with things such as disabled car parking, loaning out of wheelchairs on match days we also have radios available for those with limited eye sight so they can enjoy the atmosphere while listening to the commentary. We offer blankets and ponchos as it can get chilly and wet on match days. This season we have been lucky enough to have been given our own box upstairs where we can up to 6 wheelchairs. You can access this by using the lift available.

If you would like to become a member or have any questions please phone the DSA Chair Sharon Swain on 07790375250 or drop them an email on YeovilTownFC@ytfcdsa.co.uk.

Darren Sarll is beginning to see a trend from his ‘settled’ team. Following the win at Dagenham, he told the BBC that the first half performance was one of the best in his time at the club.

“I thought first half in particular, we were really, really good. It’s right up there, that first half performance, in my time here. That’s how good I thought we were. I thought it was a really good performance (in the) first half, we looked controlled, we look settled at the moment which is nice,” he said.

He praised the incredible spirit of last year’s squad after the ordeal they went through, but added that the current group of Glovers are building a close bond.

“They’ve got a real togetherness, and a tightness in their relationships. It does help that they’re all pretty much 21 – 24, minus a couple. And, those seniors players are really really leading them well at the minute.”

“The best thing about the group, their kind of USP, is that they have a unique work ethic and it endears them to people and that’s lovely to see again, a nice moment again with the supporters (at the end).”

Yeovil are now six unbeaten (don’t let anyone tell you the SPC doesn’t count) and Sarll sees that consistency coming from being able to name unchanged personnel. He said: “We’re starting to see a little bit of a trend and a pattern. It’s nice to see that consistency, but it does get easier when you can consistently roll out the same side.”

Yeovil have another tough test on Tuesday night as they head to 4th-place Bromley.

Darren Sarll was full of praise for the defensive efforts of his Yeovil Town side after the Glovers picked up three points at Dagenham & Redbridge this afternoon.

Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Sheridan Robins following the match Sarll said: “Regardless of 10 v 11, I thought we always had to be concentrating and focused. Again, you see the quality of (Luke) Wilkinson in these minutes, in these moments. The back four and the goalkeeper were excellent and to still have the same amount of goals conceded after coming away to Dagenham, I think they should be very proud of themselves.”

The manager also reserved special mentions for his two fullbacks, Jordan Barnett and Dan Moss, who worked hard to keep the Dagger’s wide players at bay.

“I thought Jordan Barnett and [Dan] Moss at full backs were out best players by a mile. Their defending 1v1 against some good players, in isolation, on their own, no support, I thought it was just magnificent.”

Sarll also praised the work ethic of his side, noting their determination to get back when countered.

“They run so hard, and they work so hard and even when there were some counter attacking moments from our attacking set plays today, the work-ethic of Worthington, Knowles, Wakefield, Gorman, Barnett to get back, I mean poor old Wilko they leave him on the goal line and they all just run back really quickly,” he added.

Dagenham were reduced to ten-men in before half time, with Elliott Johnson given a straight red card for a tackle on Moss, and Sarll indicated there was room for improvement from his team in those situations.

“I think you can see what type of side we are, because, I find, when we do play against ten men, we do struggle to retain the ball for periods that need to be a little bit longer.

What it does, especially when you’re in the lead, it takes the sting out of the game. It means you can breath, it means you can get control, it means you can get territory. Those things are really important, so I was a bit disappointed with our ball retention in the second half,” he said.

The dream of the Quadruple remains a mathematic possibility for Yeovil Town after progressing through to the third round of the Somerset Premier Cup with a 2-0 win at Larkhall Athletic.

There were not a huge number of travelling supporters at the tie but one of them was Jake Farrant, a member of the Green & White Supporters’ Club, and here are this five conclusions…..

Finding the ground is a total mystery. I’ve heard reports before that getting to Larkhall’s ground is a bit difficult – but even so I still didn’t imagine it being that much of a problem to find. Famous last words I suppose – even though we were using a sat-nav we ended up going round in circles on some quiet, steep, narrow sub-urban roads in Bath and then ended up on a newly built housing estate down a dead end street as the sat-nav didn’t appear to know where it was either! Eventually we managed to find our way there and had plenty of time for a pre-match pint! The ground is in a very remote location and it reminded me of Forest Green Rovers whereby you drive down a single track country road and all of a sudden it just appears in front of you. If we ever draw them again in the Somerset Cup I would recommend leaving with plenty of time to spare, use a sat-nav and take somebody with you to try and understand where the sat-nav is trying to take you!

Sonny Blu Lo-Everton continues to impress. I personally have liked Lo-Everton since he came here. It took him a while to settle down and find his feet but in more recent games he has looked very sharp, created chances and just generally looks like one of our more lively players. During the match it was the same story whereby his ability to run forward and provide Yeovil with opportunities was good to see. It was also nice to see him grab another goal as well even if it was a tap in from a free kick as any goal that he can score will hopefully increase his confidence levels and potentially raise his game even further.

Max Evans looked solid. Evans has been a regular on the teamsheet all season and with him being reserve keeper we naturally haven’t seen that much of him of late. Maybe it’s just me but I always like to have a backup keeper on the bench in every match we play in just in case Smith gets injured. It doesn’t happen very often but I do like to have comfort in the knowledge that there is another keeper we can call upon. Seeing Max make some excellent saves during the game and looking like a more experienced keeper than he currently is gave me even more confidence that he would be able to be first choice keeper if we needed him to be. He came to Yeovil’s rescue a few times in the match and it was nice that he kept a clean sheet and had something to show for his efforts.

Yussuf’s needless bookings continue. Whether you like Adi Yussuf’s presence on the pitch or not – I think there is something we can all agree on – and that is that he often picks up yellow cards for needless challenges and niggly fouls. The second yellow at Boreham Wood is a classic example of this and even getting booked at Yate Town when we were well ahead in the game also springs to mind. It was a similar story at Larkhall and it often prevented him from creating potential goalscoring chances as there were a few occasions where he had got himself into a good position but ended up giving away a foul or ended up trying to look for a free kick rather than taking the player on. It would be interesting to see how much his game improves if he manages to overcome this as he may be able to create a lot more chances for us going forward.

David Coates needs to hang his head in shame. I’ve known David for a good few years now and I was lead to believe that he was a die hard Yeovil Town supporter who would follow his club to the ends of the earth. Unfortunately that doesn’t include Larkhall Athletic! I looked everywhere for him at the game and after a while I had to come to the simply shocking conclusion that David simply wasn’t there! The Somerset Cup is a prestigious tournament – and the game at Larkhall last night was the biggest game in Yeovil’s season so far. I therefore don’t think that it is too much to ask for Mr Coates to make the trip from his home in Preston to Larkhall for a mid-week Somerset Cup tie – unbelievable!
