A second half Morgan Williams goal earned Yeovil Town a gritty win in the all-Somerset clash with Weston-super-Mare at Huish Park on Tuesday night.

The Glovers made a perfect start when Sam Pearson opened the scoring after 50 seconds but the visitors pulled level when Jacob Cane took advantage of a mix-up between Williams and Joe Day to lift the ball over the keeper with 23 minutes played.

It took until seven minutes from time for Williams to head home a corner to maintain a magnificent home record with yet another win.

Here’s how Ian saw it from his spot in the stands…..

First half

Yeovil Town were forced into changes and named just four players on the bench. Jay Foulston came in for Alex Whittle who missed out completely, Will Dawes came in for Dylan Morgan and Jordan Stevens started in place of Frank Nouble.

It took less than a minute for the Glovers to open the scorning. Neat interplay between Young, Smith and Stevens saw the winger played through into space on the right hand side and his low delivery was flicked home by SAM PEARSON. 1-0

The familiar pattern of patient play emerged following the goal with Yeovil probing their opponents and in the 12th minute green shirts flooded forward and Matt Worthington drew a save from Max Harris after being played through.

In a game Yeovil had total control of, a moment of misjudgment by Morgan Williams allowed JACOB CANE to get in behind the Glovers backline and loop the ball over Joe Day into the back of the net to equalise.

Three minutes later, Jordan Young came close to restoring Yeovil’s advantage after a cross from Will Dawes, but his left-footed effort was wide of the mark.

The equaliser seemed to spark a bit of life into Mark Cooper’s side as they upped the tempo around the Weston box. They had to keep their wits about them though, as a fierce left-footer from Rex Mannings flashed wide of Day’s post.

Yeovil regained control again, with patient play. But as Weston prevented Yeovil playing through the lines, the Huish Park crowd grew restless and the composure began to fade. A loose long pass from Williams allowed Weston to get forward, but the final ball was lacking.

A late set piece after a Jake Wannell foul got the hearts racing a bit, but the header from Humphries was high and wide.

Half time: Yeovil Town 1 Weston-super-Mare 1

Second half

Neither side many any changes at half time and Yeovil came out stronger of the two teams. It wasn’t until the 54th minute when a decent chance opened up. A good ball over the top found Sam Pearson who had to cut back onto his left foot. Pearson sliced his effort wide when he had support from Dawes to his left.

Another chance came soon after with a dangerous ball into the box that a falling Jordan Young couldn’t connect with inside the six yard box.

The gloves of Joe Day were called into action moments later from a stinging Dayle Grubb shot.

On the hour mark, Stevens drew another save from Harris with a low shot, but he had options square to him as well.

Young crept through inside the box and instead of shooting when the chance was there, he tried to round the keeper and couldn’t bundle in. Yeovil’s number 7 appealed for the penalty, but the referee waved them away.

In the 62nd minute, Mark Cooper introduced Frank Nouble for Jordan Stevens and in the 69th, Will Dawes made way for Dylan Morgan.

There was a nervy moment for Yeovil when Wannell conceded a free kick in a promising position for Weston. After what felt like an eternity, Grubb skied it into the away end.

Nouble got the supporters going with a ranger from distance with his left foot that had Harris panicking. He composed himself and parried away as Alex Fisher put on the pressure.

Yeovil regained their lead from another set piece special in the 83rd minute. MORGAN WILLIAMS rose above everyone to power a header past Harris in front for the Thatchers! 2-1

After the goal, Weston took control as they searched for a leveller. Yeovil were penned back and were defending for their lives at times.

The Glovers held on scored another valuable win!

Yeovil Town picked up another win at home on a wet and windy afternoon at Huish Park yesterday. The Glovers remain ten points clear at the top of National League South. Here are Ian’s conclusions from the Press Box…

The conditions played their part. The rain wasn’t that heavy before kick off but through the afternoon it got worse and worse. Yeovil enjoyed plenty of control in the first half, but couldn’t make the possession count. You could see the pitch getting heavier and by the time the second half kicked off the sideways rain and wind was directly at Joe Day’s goal. The familiar tactic of playing out from the back and drawing our opponents in before beating the press became increasingly difficult in the second half. The weather wasn’t conducive to quality football but the Glovers did manage to create some excellent chances…

…that should have been buried. San Pearson, Frank Nouble and Jordan Stevens all had 1 v 1s with Worner in the Havant goal and should have done better. The keeper managed to save from Pearson and Stevens when they had all the time in the world to pick their spot. Nouble could only put his effort over the bar as did Pearson when Worner dropped it in the six yard box. We’re in a position (10 points clear baby!) where we can afford to be profligate in front of goal, but if we have the tiniest eye on next season, we need to be getting used to putting those type of chances in the back of the net.

Another set piece routine was the difference. After last week’s success with Jake Wannell bagging two goals from headers, yesterday’s was a very different routine. The short corner grumblers can grumble no more, as slick interplay between Pearson and Sonny Blu-Lo Everton put Sonny in acres of space to put the ball on a plate for Wannell to bundle in on the line. There will always be an element of a hopeful hoof into the mixer for someone to try and get their head on, but if you can get some of these routines in the bank, it’s an added dimension to a team that relied on that solitary goal yesterday.

The referee seemed to want his moment. I’m breaking Gloverscast Rule #1 here by bringing up the man in the middle, but I thought George Lafin had a poor game. Jordan Young should have had a penalty in the first half, after he was cut down by a Havant defender who had to go through him to get to the ball. He gave Nouble and Young bookings for kicking the ball away. Nouble’s was ridiculous and Young barely touched the ball for his after conceding a cynical foul. He was also quite willing to allow Havant the time to chew his ear off without repercussions. The assistant gave two throws to Havant which we’re clearly for Yeovil. The lack of consistency among referees from the top to the bottom of English football is far more of an issue than blue cards.

Fortress Huish was a bit muted. I’m not sure if it was the weather or that we’d not been at home for a couple of weeks but it did feel quiet from where I was. For a club that’s not lost a single match at home, it’s strange to feel a lack of atmosphere. People out there will have better ideas than I do on how to fix it. Mark Cooper alluded to it afterwards and said his players “need the fans behind us”, especially for this final run. Yeovil have fourteen matches left this season and only six of those at at Huish Park. For many, that’s just six more chances to see this team, which is on course to win the club a League title for the first time since 2005. League titles don’t come round very often, it’s time to start enjoying it!

Jake Wannell scored two for the Glovers in the 4-2 win against Tonbridge Angels, and the defender said he felt confident attacking set pieces after working on hard on it training this week.

Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Ian Randall, Wannell was “100%” claiming the first: “It was on target and just took a little nick off the defender and luckily went in.[I’m] claiming it. I’ve got a target in mind that I’m close to. How many games that left now? 15 games? I need a couple more and I’m happy.

“Every time we had a set piece, I was confident today. Sometimes you get a feeling when going up for a corner or a free kick that you’ve got the better of your man and luckily today I did.

“We’ve been working on it [set pieces] this week. We feel like we haven’t been having a lot of joy with our set pieces as of late. So this week we regrouped, switched up our runs, started a little bit deeper and different kind of technique of a cross coming in and it’s it paid dividends there,” he said.

Yeovil started strong, scoring two early goals and despite an uncharacteristic error from Michael Smith, the Glovers rode out a tricky spell until half time.

“We actually started the game the best we probably started in a long time, so the goal came at a difficult time for us. Smithy, he’s been unbelievable for us, so it’s so out of character, but I thought we dealt with it well and got to half time, discussed what we could do better in the second-half and I feel like we dealt with that.”

With no fixture until Havant & Waterlooville next weekend, Wannell said he and his teammates would regroup ahead of Saturday, and that he’s not looking too far ahead.

“It’s called the business end in football terms, but we’re not looking too far ahead. We’re just trying to tick off every game as it comes and that’s it.”

Mark Cooper interviewed after Yeovil Town's 4-2 win at Tonbridge Angels

Mark Cooper interviewed after Yeovil Town's 4-2 win at Tonbridge Angels

Mark Cooper praised his ‘magnificent’ players as Yeovil bounced back from defeat at Maidstone last weekend to beat Tonbridge Angels 4-2 this afternoon.

The gaffer said the performance was ‘brilliant’ for the first 20 minutes and that the fitness of his side told towards the end. Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Ian Randall he said: “We we’re brilliant for 20 minutes. 2-0 up, everything we worked on, the way that we kept the ball, and they were a really aggressive pressing team, but we took that out of their game. The only problem was we gave them a really poor goal which gave them some encouragement and became difficult for us. It’s an error that gives them all the encouragement and momentum, I think, to get to half time 2-0 it’s a difficult one for them.

“These things happen. We have to keep going and just make sure we get the three points and the boys kept going and you saw the power at the end and the fitness, we had five players sprinting to get on the end of that ball, but Worthy decided to take it himself.”

Jake Wannell scored two from corners and Cooper revealed the assistant Chris Todd had spent some time working on set pieces in training.

“We’ve not scored for a few weeks. Toddy did a lot of work yesterday with that delivery, like your little stand up onto the six yard box for Wans to attack and it worked a treat today. Wans has been struggling with a stiff neck, but it didn’t stop heading the ball today, that’s for sure.”

Michael Smith returned to the starting line up after missing two matches through injury but with Charlie Cooper missing, Alex Whittle only lasting a half due to illness and now Olly Thomas out for month, Cooper said he would continue to adapt rather than add to his squad.

“You can’t keep signing players. I hear some managers moan. Injuries we can moan about; we’ve lost Coops, Hydey, Murphy, Michael Smith, Whittle. You can moan, but that’s what you build your squad for. We’ve got Olly Thomas, now injured for a month. Nothing to do with us. He got injured playing for Bristol City Under 21s on Monday night at Sunderland. We brought him in to replace Murph and Hyde, so that one’s gone, but as a coach you have to adapt. You can’t have everything, you know. And I don’t want to keep going to the chairman, he’s been fantastic, and asking him for more money.”

“I’ll be happy if I get that team on the pitch next Saturday. We’re happy. We could probably go and sign another player or two, but I don’t wanna upset the group. They are a magnificent group and I just wanna keep them together and give the boys that we’ve got opportunities,” he said.

Ian, Ben and Dave return for your Friday dose of the Gloverscast. We talk Jamie Sendles-White’s departure, look ahead to Tonbridge and take your GCQs!
