Ben Barrett (Page 5)

Ref, Referee, Match Official

Son of former Premier League referee Paul Durkin, James is the match official who will look after the Glovers’ game vs Sutton United this midweek.

We haven’t seen James for a little while actually, not since a 1-1 draw away at Aldershot in April 2023. Six Glovers got booked that day, including both Coopers.

In total, we’ve had him six times, just winning the one – a 2-1 win over Bromley in 2022.

As an additional quirk, back on 27th October, 2010, he took charge of this exact fixture. That game ended in a 2-1 win for Sutton; Joe Quigley scoring in between two Harry Beautyman efforts.

So far, this season, he’s taken charge of 25 games across six competitions, dishing out a clean 100 cards (4 per game on average for the maths wizzes) six reds and nine penalties have also been at the centre of his matches.

He has already seen a Sutton United game this season, a 4-2 defeat away at Wealdstone.

Adam Wilson and James Tewson will be on flagging duties with Jack Clench the fourth official.

Fourth Official: Clench, Jack

Michael Barlow has the honour of making his way to Brunton Park this Saturday to take charge of the game between Yeovil Town and Carlisle United.

A referee we’ve only seen twice, both on both occasions things didn’t go particularly well for the Glovers.

He took charge of a 1-0 away defeat to Halifax in April 2022, and then, just shy of a year later he took charge of the 3-0 defeat to Wrexham which sealed Yeovil’s relegation out of the National League and into the NLS.

He’s only taken one Carlisle game in his career, a 2-1 defeat away at Southend back in November.

13 games in total for Mr Barlow this season, resulting in 45 yellows (3.46 per game) two reds – both in the EFL – and just one solitary penalty awarded!

He’ll be assisted by George Eaton and Mark Cunliffe with Andrew Daniels on fourth official duties.

Referee: Barlow, Michael
Assistant Referee: Eaton, George
Assistant Referee: Cunliffe, Mark
Fourth Official: Daniels, Andrew

Let’s wrap this game up once and for all shall we, it’ll be of no great surprise that Jed Ward has once again taken your Man of the Match vote for the 2-1 home defeat to Aldershot.

The Bristol Rovers loanee has easily moved into double figures for the number of MOTM wins this season, and continues to impress for the Glovers, win, lose or draw.

Captain Jake Wannell was 2nd, with goal scorer Terrell Works coming in third.

Audio Devices, Ear Defenders and Sensory Packs

York City FC and The Wilf Ward Family Trust continued their excellent working relationship in the 2024/25 season by expanding their match day accessibility provision. The aim is to create a welcoming and supportive environment for all fans, ensuring that every individual can enjoy the excitement of sports and feel fully included in the community.

 Audio Devices
Blind or partially sighted supporters can loan a matchbox-size audio device to hear real-time audio commentary of the match from BBC Radio York (using a radio streaming service can have up to a seven second delay). Please bring your own headphones with an aux input cable to use.

 Ear Defenders

We are able to provide complimentary ear defenders, which are yours to keep, upon request to help individuals who may experience sensory overload during the game.

Sensory Packs*

We also have ten x sensory packs which are available to loan on a match-by-match basis; please note that we can only offer one pack per family/group per match to make sure as many can access these as possible.

*Sensory packs and individual items (fidget spinners and stress balls) will be available to purchase, so they are yours to keep, in our Club Shop here.
Supporters who wish to access any of these resources are requested to complete this short form once they have secured their tickets so that we can prepare the appropriate number of items to distribute on the day. Anyone who does not complete the form but would like to receive a resource may not be able to so please complete the form in advance to avoid disappointment.

Collection and Return
On the day, head to Turnstiles 7-9 (closest to the swimming pool entrance of the Leisure Centre) to collect your ear defenders and/or sensory packs from our YCFC Volunteers team.

After the match, you are kindly requested to return your sensory pack(s) to the club office, located inside the Leisure Centre (opposite the lifts).

Firstly, please complete this form to let us know that you’d like to collect a set at the match.

At turnstiles 7-9, you’ll meet the lovely Doreen, part of our match day volunteers team, YCFC Volunteers, who will have your resource(s). Providing you’ve completed the form, just give your name(s) and pick yours up.

Stadium Entry

All entries to the stadium require a match ticket, which must be scanned before entry. There are automated turnstiles with built-in ticket scanners to use but for those uncomfortable with small spaces, please speak to any of the stewards on duty who will grant you access through a large gate next to the turnstiles, rather than the regular turnstile, upon presentation of your match tickets.

Wheelchair and Mobility Scooter Users and Supporters with Limited Mobility

Enter the stadium via the Hospitality Entrance where you can access the lifts to take you to the top of the East Stand. Once the doors open, our match day volunteers will signpost you through the Jorvik Lounge and out to the gantry through the accessible route. From here, you can access the wheelchair and mobility scooter user spaces as well as any other seats in the stand, which may be particularly helpful to those seated towards the top of the stand. Wheelchair and mobility scooter users are welcome to enter and exit via the Jorvik Lounge to access concessions stalls and toilets and return outside to enjoy the match.

Toilets and Changing Facilities

There are male, female, and accessible toilets in every stand within the stadium and Hospitality. For those requiring a Changing Places Toilet, this can be found at the Leisure Centre reception.
All toilets within the stadium also feature baby changing facilities. All accessible toilets inside the stadium are now stoma-friendly to support those with additional needs.

Wheelchair and Mobility Scooter Users

Toilets are located just inside the swimming pool entrance to the stadium, with more on Floor 2 which can be accessed via the Hospitality lounges once your match ticket(s) has been scanned.

Safe Exit and Quiet Room

If for any reason you need to leave the stadium, go back the way you came in and stewards will help guide you outside to a safe, quiet space.
A quiet room (see photo above) is accessible on the day for anyone who needs a private space; please just speak to the Leisure Centre reception for access.

 Leaving the Stadium

Whenever you would like to leave the stadium, please do so via the same route as when you came in. Please speak to club volunteers or any match day stewards if you’re not sure where to go.

Wheelchair and Mobility Scooter Users

In cases of emergency, all wheelchair or mobility scooter users are advised to remain in place so that they can be guided out safely. Evac Chairs are stored at every stand for use in emergencies.

Well, that was… a bit rubbish, wasn’t it?

Ben dialled up his DAZN stream and took in the Glovers’ 2-1 defeat to Aldershot. Here are his five conclusions.

A result that undid all the good work vs Rochdale.

Actually a performance that undid all the good work vs Rochdale

The harsh truth is that Aldershot wanted it more, the Aldershot players also played with 10 men on Saturday (for longer than we did) but they came with a plan to come out of the boxes quickly, stun us and then just never relented.

The honest thought is that, instead of fighting fire with fire, we went into damage limitation mode and couldnt get a foot into the game at all. And if I had a quid for every time we gave the ball away, by yearly DAZN subscription would have been covered twice over.

That’s about Aldershot deciding to live and die by their positive actions and they well and truly deserved every bit of it.

Finn Cousin-Dawson celebrates his goal

For the love of Phil Jevons will someone find a striker.

Twice in the game, we had set pieces in attacking areas which Jake Wannell won in the air, twice the ball fell into the six yard box and twice, not a soul in green and white was to be seen.

Wannell’s arms went up in exasperation twice. Where is the striker who snaffles five or six a season by sticking their foot through one from 4 yards, who wants to be in the mix, where push comes to shove, where youve got to get a kick, where you’ve got to do anything and everything to get that ball over the line? Aldershot had someone like that. He won them the game.

Tahvon Campbell
Pic c/o Gary Brown

Ward and Works worth their weight.

We’ve said it a million times, here’s 1,000,001. Without Jed Ward we’d be well and truly stuffed wouldn’t we?

By his standards, he actually had a below par game, some sloppy distribution and a couple of little fumbles. But we were in the game because of him, he’s saved us so many points this season.

And a word for Works, who is diminutive in stature, but when he flashes into gear, my word there’s a player there. The sort of player we’ll see doing great things in the future and we’ll say “remember that belter he scored vs Aldershot that time?”.

Terrell Works shoots….and scores. Nice one, son.

Worried without Wannell

Jake Wannell’s tenth yellow of the season means he’ll miss the next two (vs Carlisle and Sutton)

Our defence has chopped and changed a fair bit this season, but we’re going to have FCD and two relative newbies against Carlisle and that’s got me a little nervous.

But, it does offer a chance for FCD, or perhaps Kyle Ferguson to hear the call for leadership from the gaffer and really step up. Just like they did vs Rochdale.

Jake Wannell strides forwards | Photo by Gary Brown

We’re still paying the price for early season chaos.

Its mid February and we’re having to manage the minutes of players who have come in after time out of other sides and we’re still asking a lot of a young side, packed full of exciting, but raw talent.

Four managers, four ideas, four plans, four plan As, four plan Bs and its clear we didnt start the season fit enough – I’d love to compare Aldershot’s heat maps and distance covered – and with games coming thick and fast it isn’t getting any easier. But the Rowley era has, overall, been a positive one, we’re still on a road to Wembley, we’re still closer to 11th (4pts) than we are to 21st (5pts).

It’s a massive summer ahead, get there unscathed in the league (and maybe a Trophy in the back pocket) and this defeat will be long forgotten.

Billy Rowley
Pic c/o Gary Brown

Yeovil Town manager Billy Rowley said his players were “not ready for the battle” as they were outplayed by an Aldershot Town side which started the match below them in the table at Huish Park on Tuesday night.

The Glovers fell behind to a goal from full-back Olly Scott after just seven minutes before pulling level through a stunning strike from on loan attacker Terrell Works with their only real effort on goal all game after 26 minutes, before Sean Patton won it for the visitors in the second half.

The 2-1 defeat pushes Yeovil down to 18th in the National League Premier Division table with a long trip to promotion-chasing Carlisle United coming up at the weekend.

Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Ian Randall after the game, Rowley said: “They were dangerous, but when you let them be dangerous, they’re even more so. My criticism of our players tonight is we weren’t ready for the battle. We knew it was going to be tough from a physical and mental side, and we didn’t match it. I thought we were quite weak in duels. I felt like we lacked a little bit of leadership on the pitch all round. You are playing in front of a brilliant support on a lovely night for football, and you’re just happy to lose your duels. I can’t stand that, I can’t stand it. Credit to Aldershot, they were miles better than us tonight, they were technically better and the game was just gritty and it was roll-your-sleeves-up time, and we didn’t do it.

Even after Terrell scored, I thought we took our foot off the gas again and let them get their rhythm. They are quite a fluid, expansive team that are quite open with how they roam around the pitch. Like I said, it was roll your sleeves up, deal with your man, fight for the badge, and we didn’t do it. We didn’t do it today. We got beat up.

Have your say on the performance – vote in our post-match poll – HERE

Aldershot, who leap-frogged the Glovers in to 14th place in the table with the three points, set the tone early with player-coach James Henry firing wide in the opening seconds of the game and never stopped pressing their hosts. It was therefore little surprise to any of the more than 3,000 supporters inside Huish Park when they took the lead through Scott’s strike.

Rowley said: “I’m a huge believer in the importance of the first five minutes of a game, it sets your tone, it sets your tempo. You need to understand how aggressive the opposition are pressing you or if they’re not. We had no feel for the game, even in the first ten minutes.

I’m really mindful of saying these things because the referees have a tough job and they’re, you know, refereeing a game in front of 3,000 people and it’s fast and it’s hard to get everything right, but in the first two minutes, we had a blatant push in Dak(ari Mafico)’s back which resulted in five, six minutes of chaos with two or three of their corners, and that could have been just cleared up with a blatant foul on our player.

But I look at the clock, ten minutes have gone, we haven’t been in their half and I think that goes down to a feel of the game. I said about leadership on the pitch all throughout the side, understanding that we haven’t been in their half and we’re on the tilt and we need to get up and we need to be more solid. We just didn’t do any of that stuff, we didn’t do basics at all.

Next up Yeovil face an almost 700-mile round trip to face a Carlisle United sat third in the division and without a midweek match with Rowley calling on his players to learn from a reality check performance.

He said: “I just went in the changing room and  I heard a couple of the boys saying the same things that I’m saying. They know it’s one of those games. I thought our support was excellent today and it’s just a shame that we didn’t use that energy on the pitch. It felt like we were the away team. The boys are equally as frustrated as me, but we’ve all got to learn from this and we’ve got to be better.

Yeovil Town captain Jake Wannell admitted the team lost the physical battle as they were outgunned by an impressive Aldershot Town side at Huish Park on Tuesday night,

The 2-1 defeat pushes the Glovers down to 18th place in the National League Premier Division table, five points off the relegation places, as they failed to offer any attacking threat aside from a stunning first half goal from loanee Terrell Works.

Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Ian Randall after the game, Wannell said: “It was a tough night at the office for us, I think the boys looked a bit leggy because we’ve played the last two games with ten men for 30 minutes in each, but fair play to Aldershot they’ve done a job.

We didn’t start the game very well at all and in the first 20 minutes couldn’t get out. Our decision-making was bad, too many turnovers but fair play to them though they’ve come out of the traps and we couldn’t deal with it.

We have played a lot of games but they obviously played a lot of games as well, so I’m not going to put that as an excuse. We have had a game every three days at the minute and it doesn’t get any easier on Saturday with a trip to Carlisle away.”

The performance was a far cry from the impressive display which saw Yeovil win many plaudits after a 1-1 draw with league leaders Rochdale just three days earlier.

Wannell added: “Saturday was a bit more of a game like chess. Tonight was a bit more roll your sleeves up and just try and dig out a result, which we didn’t do. We’ll rest up tomorrow and then come with a plan for (the game at Carlisle United on) Saturday.
