Yeovil Town have made three changes to their starting XI from Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Rochdale as they take on Aldershot Town at Huish Park tonight (7.45pm kick-off).

Loan defender Declan Skura is handed his first start having joined from Wycombe Wanderers with fellow loanee Terrell Works and Harvey Greenslade also brought in to the line-up.

Dropping to the bench at Joy Mukena, Josh Sims and Tahvon Campbell who are joined among the substitutes by midfielder Jonathon Page who has been missing since picking up an injury in the 2-1 defeat at Brackley Town.

Dakarai Mafico has been named your Man of the Match for the 1-1 draw vs Rochdale on Saturday.

The Cardiff loanee was in a more central role for this game and marshalled the midfield brilliantly, Finn Cousin-Dawson helped keep one of the best strike forces in the league quiet and bagged a goal for himself to finish 2nd with Jed Ward claiming his 25th spot on the Gloverscast MOTM podium this season!

A game under the lights is in store for Yeovil Town as they face Aldershot Town at Huish Park on Tuesday night.

FORM…

YEOVIL TOWN

The Glovers form has been solid for at least least a month now, since the 2-1 loss to Brackley. In that time Yeovil have played four games winning two drawing one and losing one. On paper a draw might not seem like the obvious high point form wise but for Billy Rowley‘s men it is one of best results this term.

That draw was last time out against now second placed Rochdale, where it finished 1-1. Going into the fixture many would have been forgiven for just hoping for loss where we showed fight and quality, what we got was much more. The game came to life early on through Aidan Barlow’s 13th minute strike for the visitors. However, the Glovers responded quickly, netting an equaliser through a Finn Cousin-Dawson header only two minutes later.Β Although there was no more goals to be had in the match, it was an entertaining watch for the home faithful. Hopefully more of that to come against Aldershot.

A worry for Rowley will be the discipline over the last two games, as he has now lost Aaron Jarvis and Kyle Ferguson through suspension.

ALDERSHOT TOWN

The Shots have also been in a rich vein of form over the last five games as well. With three wins, one draw and a loss in that time. The Hampshire side have been bagging a lot of goals in that time too with 12 goals scored. The downside has been that they’ve conceded heavily as well, as they have let in nine goals during that time.

That said, in their most recent fixture The Shots also drew 1-1, with their result coming against a stubborn Tamworth team. The Lambs were down to 10 men early on after a Dan Creaney was shown red, not to be upstaged by the home team, Aldershot saw their own Keane Anderson dismissed in the 45+3 minute.

Tamworth broke the deadlock soon after the break, through Oliver Lynch. The Shots looked destined to lose, before Charlie Warren popped up with an injury time equaliser to split the points.

KEY PLAYERS…

YEOVIL TOWN – DAKARAI MAFICO

It’s fair to say Mafico has been magnificent since he arrived on loan from Cardiff City. The midfielder has produced in all areas of the pitch, whether it be his ability to break up play or his attacking intent. He has been one of our better loan signings in recent years that’s for sure. And although he may not score like Luke McCormick does, he is the player that allows a McCormick-esque midfielder to push forward and get those crucial goals.

Still only 19-years-old, Mafico looks like a high level EFL player in the making. Let’s just hope our Welsh counterparts will let him stay for another year at least.

ALDERSHOT TOWN – CHARLIE WARREN

The striker joined on loan from Bolton a just before Christmas and has been a dominant force up top for the Shots. With six goals in eight game, he has definitely repaid the faith John Coleman has put in him.

The 19-year-old has already become a fan favourite and the EBB Stadium and with a goal record like his it’s not hard to see why. Of those six scored three have been in the last two games, with a brace against Halifax a highlight. Shot fans will love him even more though after his last minute equaliser against Tamworth on Saturday. Yeovil defenders will have to be in top form to keep this in form youngster off the scoresheet.

THE GAFFER…

A familiar lower league name has taken charge at The EBB Stadium and will be in the dugout on Tuesday night, in the shape of John Coleman. The 63-year-old is best known for being Accrington Stanley’s former boss, where he spent 23 years as boss across two spells.

Outside of his long stints in the North-West, Coleman has managed Ashton United, Rochdale, Southport, Sligo, Gillingham and Waterford for a total of five years.

The Scouser joined the Shots in October and has turned the Hampshire side form around. He has also managed against the Glovers nine times, winning twice, drawing three times and losing on four occasions.

LAST TIME WE MET…

As mentioned above, Yeovil had arguably their best performance of the season the last time these two side met. The Glovers ran out 4-1 winners back in September in another midweek night fixture.

A Tahvon Campbell goal opened the scoring before Junior Morias doubled the scoring. Luke McCormick then scored quickly after before Campbell made it four with a penalty in the 64th minute. James Henry bagged a consolation goal in added time for Aldershot.

DON’T I KNOW YOU…

Just Tristan Abrahams as the only former Glovers in the Shots squad for Tuesday nights game. The striker played for Yeovil in the 2018/19 season, making 15 appearances and scoring three goals.

THE MAN IN THE MIDDLE…

Greg Rollason is the man in charge for this fixture. For more information on him and his team for Tuesday night check out Ben’s article – here.

Dakarai Mafico and Finn Cousin-Dawson have been awarded places in teams of the week.

Both the Non League Paper and Enterprise give the Cardiff loanee a spot in their mythical line ups whilst FC-D also gets a place in the official sponsor’s XI in the heart of the defence.

Rumours that Mani Dieseruvwe misses out because he’s still in FC-Ds back pocket are yet to be confirmed.

Congrats, Dak and Finn!

The Football Association have confirmed a three match ban for Aaron Jarvis.

The striker had only been on the pitch for a short time before a coming together between Jarvis’ forearm Rochdale defender Kyren Gorden’ neck resulted in a straight red card from Niall Smith.

Ollie Whatmuff tells Aaron Jarvis exactly what he did wrong

After the game, manager Billy Rowley saidΒ

β€œI have to be honest, I’ve not seen it back, so I’m going to have to go and watch that back before I can comment. In terms of how we’ve deal with that internally, I’ll always deal with that with the lads in the dressing room and the club.

But naturally, as well as everybody that cares about this football club, I’m, I’m frustrated by it, I’m annoyed by it, but I can’t really, I can’t really say much more until I see it.”

The charge goes down as Violent Conduct which carries a standard three-match ban.

Jarvis will he unavailable for the games against Aldershot (Tues 17th), Carlisle (Sat 21st) and Sutton (Weds 25th) becoming available again for the trip to Southport in the FA Trophy on Saturday 28th February.

As an aside, the FA also confirmed to the Gloverscast that captain Jake Wannell is on nine yellow cards, one more and he’ll serve a two match suspension.

It was a return to Huish Park after 35 days of postponements and away days and the Glovers showed they’re no slouches against promotion-chasers Rochdale. Here are Ian’s Five Conclusions…

We held our own against promotion hopefuls. Even the most optimistic of supporters must have gone into yesterday with massive apprehension going up against the – at the time – league leaders. Rochdale were in unbelievable form and had not dropped a single point from a winning position all season…until they came to Huish Park. We showed all the buzzwords yesterday: character, determination, spirit, camaraderie and played some good football before we were frustratingly reduced to 10 men.

Yeovil Town huddle | Pic c/o Gary Brown

Aaron Jarvis owes his teammates a Thatchers. When Jarvis replaced Campbell (who had one of his better games) the match was nicely poised, we’d enjoyed some decent chances and were holding our own but the first time we tossed the ball up for Jarvis to compete the worst happened. I thought it was sheer idiocy. We know how Jarvis competes and looks for contact but the way he led with his forearm, arm not looking at the ball gave the referee very little choice. I know he plays looking for contact and roughing up his opposing defenders, but I thought it was really poor and he let everyone down.

Referee Niall Smith gives Aaron Jarvis his marching orders

Finn Cousin Dawson stepped up. It’s often been a case of always the bridesmaid never the bride for FCD. He’s not one of the first choice centre backs and he’s been shoe-horned into the floating wingback role, so it was nice to see him get his flowers yesterday. His header to bring us back level was pinpoint perfection and he had a solid game in at right centre back. For me, he’s more dependable than Ferguson.

Finn Cousin-Dawson wheels away | Pic by Gary Brown

Mafico made another mark. What a find Dakarai Mafico is. (Hat tip to Declan Skura too) The Cardiff youngster was in centre midfield yesterday – or number 6 as the cool kids say – and he was fantastic. Brave on the ball, forward-thinking, confident to play through the lines. He did his defensive work and got us attacking too. We may only get to enjoy him this season, (although with Cardiff chasing promotion to the Championship they might let us have him back next season, right?) but the way he knits everything together between defence and attack is well beyond his years.

Dakarai Mafico | Pic c/o Gary Brown

It was a great game of football. Billy Rowley described it as ‘cat and mouse’ whilst admitting modern football can be a bit boring (hear, hear) but I thought it was an entertaining game. We played some nice football and after 35 days since we were last at Huish Park, I could see an improvement and the style beginning to come through. In the moments when we played out from the back it looked more instinctive than it has done. We did the dogged stuff for the last 20 minutes and the players deserved their standing ovation from the supporters at full time.

Greg Rollason will take charge of Yeovil’s midweek clash with Aldershot this coming Tuesday.

We’ve seen Mr Rollason a few times in recent season’s, but not for a while.

Most recently, he took charge of the 3-2 home win over Ebbsfleet in the National League South, he booked Aaron Jarvis that night… which won’t be an issue this coming Tuesday.

He also over saw a 2-0 win over Torquay on New Years’ Day 2023.

In total, he’s refereed Yeovil five times, the Glovers winning three, drawing one and losing just once.

He’s taken charge of just eight games at National League level, this season – including a 4-1 win for Aldershot over Eastleigh – but has been used more regularly in the EFL Competitions.

In 18 games, he’s dished out 77 yellow cards (4.2 per game), just one red card and pointed to the spot seven times.

Samuel Fudge and Mark Senior will join him as assistants with David Middleton on fourth official duties.

James Daly has won the Man of the Match vote from the 3-2 defeat to Boreham Wood last Wednesday.

The winger came on as a substitute and made an almighty impact scoring what the Glovers had hoped would be a dramatic equaliser and nearly going on to create a winner.

Jed Ward takes his customary spot on the podium, with skipper Jake Wannell take the bronze medal spot after his first goal of the campaign.
