Foot In The Opposition Camp – Altrincham (A)
We’re on our way to Altrincham!
Ben’s caught up with Erin from Golf Road Goals about the host’s season.
Match Preview: Altrincham FC vs Yeovil Town
Yeovil Town are back in league action this weekend with a trip to Greater Manchester, as they face Altrincham on Saturday afternoon.
FORMβ¦
YEOVIL TOWN
The Glovers will be hoping for a win off the back of their FA Trophy progression last weekend when they faced AFC Telford United. The match against The Robins will be Billy Rowley’s men first of nine over the next month. With the amount of games to play in a short period of time a good performance and three points would see Yeovil off to a good start.
As mentioned, in the Glovers last game they faced AFC Telford United in the FA Trophy, which they won 0-2. The game was notable for two of Yeovil’s out form strikers bagging the goals. The first goal will be debated as to whether it was an own goal by Ammar Dyer or not. If you ask Harvey Greenslade though, he will claim it as to give the Glovers a 0-1 lead. The winner came in the 63rd minute when Tahvon Campbell picked up the ball and confidently paced his finish past Telford’s Josh Gracey.

ALTRINCHAM FC
The Robins have played twice in the league since the Glovers last had a league fixture. The first was a 3-1 defeat away to Carlisle. Altrincham capitulated within an eight minute period when they conceded all three goals between the 25th and 34th minute. Jimmy Knowles then got one back but proved a little to late with 20 minutes to go.
The Greater Manchester side then met a struggling Morecambe on Tuesday night at the J.Davidson Stadium. The Robins didn’t look great in the 1-1 as they again conceded first. It was then an Ollie Crankshaw goal that rescued a point.
Altincham currently sit one place below the Glovers in 16th with one win, two draws and two losses over their last five games.
KEY PLAYERSβ¦
YEOVIL TOWN β JED WARD
The keeper has been the Glovers standout performer this season, keeping his side in games and making a silly amount of saves (103 to be precise). The Somerset side haven’t really had a this good a player in goal since maybe Arturo Krysiak and if not him your looking at Wayne Hennessy or Marek Stech.

Any pundit or manager will say a good side begins with its spine and a goalkeeper is the base that keeps it together, and Β although Yeovil may be missing the other three players in that spine, Ward is definitely a good start. And with his Bristol Rovers boss, Steve Evans, not paying attention to his scintillating form, he may be looking to catch the eye of his parent club’s gaffer.
ALTINCHAM – JIMMY KNOWLES
The forward has been The Robins’ biggest attacking threat this season, with six goals and five assists to his name. His form, if anything does not mirror that of his clubs. Whilst The Robins’ form over the last four games has seen only one win, Knowles’ performance have been his best over the season. During that time, he has a goal and two assists, and has been his sides best player in those games as well.
Although throughout his career he has probably been considered a striker, this season he has been deployed on the left wing. This change in position has led to a good season for the forward, which he will hope to take into the games against the Glovers.
THE GAFFERβ¦
Neil Gibson is the man in the home dugout this weekend. The 46-year-old took over in November after a brief spell as caretaker manager. Gibson, has previously managed Prestatyn Town on three operate occasions, between 2007 and 2020. He then had two year spells at Flint Town United and Connah’s Quay Nomads before a very short spell at Wealdstone United.
In Gibson’s one game against the Glovers during his managerial career, he won.
LAST TIME WE METβ¦
The two sides last met in September last year when Yeovil took all three points in 1-0 victory at Huish Park. The Glovers goal that day came through now former player, Morgan Williams (it still hurts we know).

However, when the two sides last met in Greater Manchester, The Robins’ ran out 2-1 winners. That fixture was played April last year, with the home side taking the lead in the 30th minute through Tyler Golden. The Glovers then equalised two minutes later through centre back Frankie Terry. However, Altrincham took all there points late on, as Lewis Baines bagged the winner in the 88th minute.
DONβT I KNOW YOUβ¦
Three names that will be recognisable to Glovers fans to look out for. The first is defender Billy Sass-Davies, who made 22 appearances whilst on loan from Crewe Alexandra back in 2022. The former Welsh youth player scored one goal in that time.
The second player to look out for is Otis Khan. The winger has had two spells at Huish Park, first of all between 2016-2018. The 30-year-old then rejoined Yeovil on loan at the back end of last season. Across his spells Khan has made 92 appearances.

The last of the trio is Josh Grant, who played for the Glovers at the. back end of the 18/19 season from Chelsea, he would play eight games.
THE MAN IN THE MIDDLEβ¦
Gareth Thomas is the man in charge for this fixture. For more information on him and his team for Saturday night check out Benβs article β here.

Rowley sets sights on league points
Yeovil Town managerΒ Billy Rowley has set his sights on pulling away from to the National League Premier Division’s relegation zone as his side prepare to travel to Altrincham this weekend.
The Glovers, who progressed to the FA Trophy quarter-finals with victory at AFC Telford United last weekend, sit three points above the drop zone with games in hand over all the teams below them except bottom club Gateshead who have also played 37 matches, but the boss is not taking anything for granted.
Following the trip to Greater Manchester on Saturday, Yeovil travel to fifth-placed Boreham Wood next Wednesday and then hosting league leaders Rochdale at Huish Park the following weekend.
Speaking to BBC Somerset’sΒ Jack KillahΒ on Thursday, the Glovers’ boss said: “It sounds an obvious thing to say, but we are really keen to make sure that we put points on the table in these last 19 games and I think as much as we need to start getting some points on the board, we still just need to start laying down some really good performances.Β
“I’m a believer that if you do that enough times from now to the end of the season, then you pick up points and you get what you deserve, so my mind is definitely on going (to Altrincham)Β and trying to be hard to beat and not concede goals and get three points.
“At the same time, I’m still trying to embed some of the new boys, some of the new loans into how we play and how we want to play and it just still might take a few more games before we can start clicking into gear like we did on Saturday quicker than we expect. If it does take a few more games, then I’m really confident in this group that we will pick up some good results from now to the end of the season.”
They face an Altrincham side sat level on 31 points with them in the table, albeit having played three more games, and only one place below them virtue of a poorer goal difference. The Robins were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Morecambe in midweek having lost 3-1 away at Carlisle United last weekend.
Rowley is expecting winger James DalyΒ to be available for the game having miss the win at Telford along with recent arrivals Ryan JonesΒ andΒ Tyrell Works, who were both cup tied, and he said star midfielderΒ Luke McCormick had been involved in training for the first time in a fortnight.

StrikerΒ Aaron Jarvis has also been involved in training, but the boss said he expected him to still be “another week” away from being considered for selection having suffered a concussion in the 2-1 defeat at Brackley Town in the last league game.
The boss also spoke about the decision to send midfielderΒ Jacob MaddoxΒ out on loan to National League North side Merthyr Town until the end of the season. The 27-year-old is making his way back after a long-term injury and has featured in a number of matchday squads recently, including an appearance as a substitute in the 72nd minute of the win at Telford last weekend.
Rowley said: “They play a good brand of football there and he will suit them a lot. He has been injured for a year and it is really hard to get lads on the pitch and give them enough opportunity and enough minutes to actually get back to where they need to get back to. So the idea behind that was to give him an opportunity to go and play enough football in the next couple of months to give him an opportunity to potentially be here next season or, if not here, somewhere else and show the best of himself.”
Rowley said he was happy with his squad following the departure of Maddox and following the recent exits of midfielder Max Jolliffe, who returned to his parent club Colchester United, and defenderΒ Michee Efete.
He said: “I’m really happy with where the squa i’s at and the depth we have in various positions. I’m always looking to bring in players, whether it be in the next couple of weeks or the end of the season. I’ve said this before in many interviews, I’m not somebody that just likes to get players in for the sake of it, just because we’ve got an extra slot available. We need to think deeply about what players we bring in and why we bring them in, and not only from an attributes perspective, we need to make sure we get the right people and people that really want to be here and play for the club.Β
“At this stage of the season with 19 games, it’s harder to find that because every player that’s out there doing well would obviously require a fee to get them away from their club. So it just so happens at this stage of the season, loans are a great way to beat that – but we already have our five loans . We might just have to wait a little bit longer to get the players that we need, but we are definitely looking.“
Match Officials – Altrincham (A)
Yeovil Town head to Altrincham this Saturday and this game will be refereed by Gareth Thomas.
Gareth has taken charge of five National League games this season which has resulted in just 11 yellow cards and one red card (to York City’s Ollie Banks).
He’s been a bit more trigger happy in other competitions, his 17 games have seen 36 yellows and four reds.
Mr Thomas might not have the fondest of memories of his only previous time in charge of a Glovers’ game.
He took charge of the 3-1 loss to Worthing right at the end of the National League South season. Yep, that one.
Those scenes in the Thatchers End, when Rhys Murphy scored the potential equaliser only to see it chalked off.
He awarded the tap in merchant Ollie Pearce a dodgy penalty too, the Glovers would have to wait for their crowning moment.
After the match, Mr Thomas felt the wrath of the crowd, had a hat thrown in his general direction and had Ian write the following words in his conclusions…
“Gareth Thomas had a shocker. Letβs get this one out of the way early doors. I canβt remember many referees whoβve gone through a game making no decisions in the middle of the pitch when they needed making, but being certain on decisions where there was doubt, in areas that make a difference.”
Water under the bridge and all that, Gareth.
He will he assisted by Declan O’Regan, Francis Sibley with David Jones on fourth official duty.
