March 2025 (Page 9)

Marcel Lavinier made his debut for Yeovil today in the 1-0 defeat at Halifax. The fullback signed until the end of the season from Forest Green Rovers told BBC Somerset’s Josh Perkins that he was happy join the club.

Asked how the move came about, Lavinier said: “I was away with Forest Green in York, because they’re playing York later today, and I was just in the hotel, and the gaffer [Steve Cotterill] said, we’ve had a chat with Yeovil about you. And I was happy and willing to come. It’s a big club, and, it’s good for me for the end of the season. So I’m happy to be here.”

Marcel Lavinier

Lavinier has barely kicked a ball in recent months and said his goals for the rest of the season were to ‘remain fit’. He added: “Keep performing and doing the best I can and trying to help the team. I strive high, and I want to push for playoffs if we can do it. So that’s how I will try and help the team.”

On the Yeovil performance in Yorkshire the right back said: “I thought the team done well in the first half – all game really. We dug, was on the front foot, w had chances in the first half, and the game’s different if you put those chances away. It was unlucky and unfortunate to concede an early goal and they just sat back for the rest of the first half and made it difficult for us. But, we still played around the box, still got a few chances, but on a different day we put them away and the game looks different.”

Yeovil Town fell to another league defeat courtesy of a first half strike from FC Halifax Town’s Angelo Capello on the notorious surface at The Shay on Saturday.

The winger fired a strike which seemed to go straight through Glovers’ keeper Aidan Stone with just 13 minutes played and that was enough to earn the hosts the three points.

Brett McGavin rattled the crossbar early in the second half with an effort from the edge of the box, but Yeovil did little to test Halifax keeper Sam Johnson.

First half

The first opportunity fell to the home side after four minutes when Cappello clipped a ball from the left side towards Adam Senior, but the combination of Aidan Stone and Frankie Terry put it off.

The ominous surface at The Shay surface, heavily watered just before kick-off, quickly showed its ‘quality’ with the majority of players looking a lot like Bambi on ice. You could tell that even the home side were uncertain which way the rutted surface, which is also the home of rugby league side, Halifax Panthers, was going to bounce.

It took 13 minutes before the home side found a breakthrough. The Glovers lost two battles in midfield before Leeds United loanee Luca Thomas pressed forward and laid the ball off to Angelo CAPELLO down the left and he drilled a shot which beat Aidan Stone far too easily. The ball flew through the keeper’s legs.

Five minutes later, a lucky bounce on the pitch set Ryan McLean away down the right, but his ball into the area was just behind Frank Nouble who could not rotate himself enough to get an effort in on goal.

On 25 minutes, great play by Sonny Blu Lo-Everton, the only player who appears to be able to control the ball on this surface, brought it under his spell, fed Brett McGavin who in turn found McLean, he stepped inside his man but his effort went over. That should have been at least on target.

On 35 minutes, Capello got away from Lavinier down the left side (again) and fed Florent Hoti who fired in a shot which Stone beat away.

The possession stats will (probably) tell you that Yeovil controlled more of the ball throughout the first half, but in terms of shots on target it was Halifax in the ascendancy.

Second half

Halifax made two substitutions at half-time with Jamie Cooke and Lewis Leigh coming on, whilst the visitors remained unchanged.

The first chance of the second half fell to Yeovil when good play down the left saw the ball find its way across to Brett McGavin, he turned his defender and thumped a shot off the crossbar.

Cooke had the ball in the net on 53 minutes, but Thomas’ slipped ball found the substitute in an offside position as he lifted the ball in to the net.

Ciaran McGuckin replaced McLean after 57 minutes, taking up a position on the left side and within three minutes of arriving, he found a shooting opportunity from the edge of the box but fired over the bar.

McGuckin lifts an effort over the bar on the hour mark.

On 64 minutes, a Jamie Cooke free kick from the edge of the area was pushed away by Stone. From one of the resulting corners, Finn Cousin-Dawson went down injured whilst Sean McGurk replaced Sonny Blu Lo-Everton.

As the game pressed in to the second half of the second half, Yeovil’s defence lived a charmed life. Firstly when Capello went down inside the box followed what looked like a push from Whittle and the referee saw no offence. Then on 73  minutes, Yeovil failed to make any impact from a corner and then allowed Halifax to sprint forward through Owen Bray who exchanged passes with Emmanuel but lifted his shot over the bar from inside the box.

Probably the best attacking opportunity since McGavin rattled the woodwork fell to McGurk with 15 minutes remaining. His effort from inside the box dropped to the substitute inside the box but was blocked. Moments later, the Swindon Town loanee was replaced by Lewys Twamley and appeared to be hobbling as he came past the away supporters.

The Shaymen almost doubled their advantage with two minutes of normal time remaining, a free-kick from the left found defender Festus Arthur at the back post, but his header was cleared off the line by Alex Whittle.

With seconds of normal time remaining, a long throw from Charlie Cooper was flicked on by Nouble before dropping to Twamley on the far post, but he could not get it under control and lifted it over the bar.

Sadly, that was the story of the Glovers’ attacking intent.

Yeovil play their second away game of the week as they travel to Yorkshire to take on FC Halifax Town.

Form Guide…

Halifax have been in solid form over the last five games, with some big wins. The Shaymen have had two wins, two draws and a loss, with that defeat coming to Southend United.

Last time out the Yorkshire team picked up a good three points against promotion rivals York City. Sitting in sixth was enough to warrant some fear for Yeovil fans but after that last result, it could be a long night for travelling supporters.

Yeovil have had been in good form, if you take into account the teams they have faced. Over their last five games there has been two wins, two losses and a draw. The two wins, although against teams the Glovers should be beating, were much needed. The draw was, should’ve and could’ve been a win against a decent Southend side and our first loss, well the less said about that the better.

Barnet vs Yeovil

Last time out for Yeovil was a heavy defeat, to top of the league Barnet. Although it should not be ignored completely, the Bees are champions elect so the result should probably be taken with a pinch of salt.

Key Players…

Yeovil – Charlie Cooper

A polarising figure within the fans base, Cooper has stepped up since the departure of long time fan favourite and captain Matt Worthington.

Charlie Cooper celebrates his goal vs Maidenhead

The midfielder has blossomed into the hole left by the “Ginger Pirlo”. With Brett McGavin and Sonny Blu Lo-Everton alongside him the centre of the park looks settled for Mark Cooper. Cooper Jnr, has helped, with leadership and performances that have been beneficial to the team.

FC Halifax Town – Jamie Cooke

It’s unusual for a team in the playoffs not to have a prolific goalscorer of note, but The Shaymen are that team. However, it clearly hasn’t mattered to Halifax as they have such a strong team, with the foundation of team being centre-midfielder Jamie Cooke.

Cooke has played 32 games this season, totalling 2,360 minutes for his side. At 23 years old it’s fair to say he has the legs to play that role. But it’s not just the consistency his manager, Chris Millington, can count on, as Cooke is the top scorer as well, with seven goals. The all-rounder will look to control the game against the Glovers, so it should be an interesting battle in midfield.

That’s what he said…

Halifax boss, Chris Millington spoke to press about the upcoming fixture. He said: “When we played them down there, we won the game but maybe didn’t deserve to, it was a very good performance late on from them. They dominated the second half , so we have got to prepare really well for them.”

Yeovil manager Mark Cooper had made no comments regarding the game.

We’ve met before…

There haven’t been many games between the sides throughout history with just 10 games being played. The head to head is even, with four wins for Yeovil and four wins for Halifax, with the two other games being draws.

The last time the two teams met was in November when The Shaymen beat the Glovers 0-1 at Huish Park, with the only goal of the game coming from Florent Hoti.

Don’t I know you…

There is no one. No one who has even played a single minute for Yeovil in the FC Halifax squad, what a rarity.

Who’s been naughty then…

No one is suspended for the game.

Right back Marcel Lavinier has become Yeovil Town’s second signing of the day following his release by National League Premier Division rivals Forest Green Rovers earlier today.

The former Swindon Town player has signed until the end of the season.

The 24-year-old has appeared 11 times for the promotion-chasing Gloucestershire outfit, all off the substitutes bench, and his departure from the New Lawn was announced on Friday afternoon.

He will join the Glovers’ squad alongside young Colchester United defender Frankie Terry, who signed on loan for the rest of the season just a couple of hours earlier.

Lavinier began his career in the footballing career in the academy set-ups at Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur and made his first-team debut for Spurs when he appeared off the bench in a Europa League fixture in February 2022.

He joined Swindon Town in September 2022 and lasted a little over a year, arriving at Forest Green in August 2023 and played 15 times as they dropped out of the Football League.

Lavinier is expected to link up with the team travelling to FC Halifax Town with right back Michael Smith expected to miss out with a hamstring injury picked up in Tuesday night’s 5-0 mauling at league leaders Barnet.

Welcome to Huish Park, Marcel.

Colchester United central defender Frankie Terry has bolstered Yeovil Town’s injury-hit back line ahead of the long trip to promotion-chasing FC Halifax Town this weekend.

The 21-year-old, the son of former Glovers’ midfielder and coach, Paul, and nephew of ex-England captain, John, has joined on loan until the end of the season.

Terry played against the Glovers for Braintree Town, where he spent four months on loan earlier this season. He was part of the Iron side which lost 3-1 at Huish Park in mid-December.

He has made one league start for the League Two side this season with two substitute appearances in the Vertu Football League Trophy this season.

His father, Paul, was part of the League Two title-winning side of 2004-05 and was part of Darren Way’s coaching staff during the ill-fated 2018-19 season which saw the club drop out of the Football League. He is now assistant manager at Leyton Orient.

Terry seems certain to be involved in the squad which takes on sixth-placed Halifax at The Shay this weekend with injuries to centre halves Morgan Williams and Jake Wannell.

He is the Glovers’ fifth loanee alongside forwards Ciaran McGuckin (Rotherham United), Sean McGurk (Swindon Town), Ryan McLean (AFC Wimbledon) and Kyrell Wilson (Swansea City), with only five loanees able to be named in a matchday squad.

Welcome to Somerset, Frankie.

Frankie Terry, who has also had loan spells at Aveley and Chelmsford City.

It was a car crash of an evening for Yeovil on Tuesday night, as they lost 5-0 at Barnet. Let’s see what happened across the rest of the league.

We begin in the Midlands , where Tamworth climbed up the table with a convincing 4-1 win over Wealdstone, Nathan Tshikuna scoring a double as they left their visitors sitting in the bottom four. A chaotic 90 minutes went down at York Road, as Maidenhead United and Braintree Town shared the points in a 3-3 draw, both sides having led the game at one point in the game. Another exciting result came at Roots Hall, where Southend United and Woking played out a 2-2 draw to keep their respective playoff and survival ambitions alive.

There were huge implications in the title race on Tuesday, with not only Barnet winning, but other title contenders losing; FC Halifax Town defeated Forest Green Rovers 2-1 at home, while Altrincham won on their travels to York City, leaving the Bees with a 9 point lead at the top. At the other end of the table, AFC Fylde came from behind in the first half to win 2-1 at home against Hartlepool United to boost their hopes of avoiding the drop.

Eastleigh continued their push for the playoffs with a steady 2-0 win at home against Ebbsfleet United, while it was a point apiece for Solihull Moors and Sutton United. There was a big result at Deepdale, as Rochdale defeated Gateshead 1-0 to keep their playoff ambitions alive, while there were 0-0 draws for Boston United and Oldham Athletic, and Aldershot Town and Dagenham & Redbridge.
