October 2021 (Page 4)

Yate Town will be our next opponents in the FA Cup first round proper after a fourth qualifying round replay win over National League strugglers Dover Athletic.

The  Southern League Premier Division South side ran out 1-0 winners in the tie which was rearranged after floodlight failure led to the previous attempt being abandoned seven days earlier.

The tie will be played at The Jeff Stadium in South Yorkshire next weekend, November 6-7.

The ticketing arrangements could be interesting with the ground having a capacity of around 2,000.

Under FA Cup rules, away clubs are awarded a minimum of 15%  tickets which would see us get 300, though potentially more with Yate presumably keen to get the biggest crowd.

We’ll update with further ticketing, travel and other such details as they become available.

Match Report

A first goal of the season for Tom Knowles put the gloss on a much-improved Yeovil Town performance to pick up their second win at Huish Park over Woking on a drizzly Tuesday night.

A strike from Charlie Wakefield had put the Glovers in front after just four minutes and the three points ended an eight-game run without a victory inside 90 minutes.

It also moved us up one place in the National League table to 14th, six points off the relegation zone and eight points off the play-off places after eleven matches.

Glovers’ boss Darren Sarll responded to a long run without a victory by dropping top-scorer Joe Quigley and bringing Adi Yussuf in to a front three, flanked by Wakefield and Knowles.

And having told his side they needed to “come out all guns blazing” after the 2-0 defeat at Grimsby Town at the weekend, Sarll’s men made an attacking start.

So much so that Yussuf had the ball in the net after just two minutes. He  rounded the keeper after stealing an extra few inches on the Woking back line and slotted the ball home, only to be denied by the flag which was up early.

No more than a few moments later  though, it was Tom Knowles who worked himself into crossing space down the left-hand side.
Charlie WAKEFIELD stole a yard on his marker, took a touch and crashed his shot high into the roof of the net to open the scoring. That’ll do.

It was nearly even better a moment later as Wakefield tried to turn provider, but his cross-come-shot was blocked.

I couldn’t help but think that if the next 83 minutes were as frantic as the first seven, I’d not be moaning.

It wasn’t long before Marcus Duncomb was worried about where his nearest off licence (heck, make it a cash and carry!) was, as Dale Gorman fizzed in his first long range effort of the evening after 12 minutes. But the tequila would be left on ice for now as the 35-yard effort sailed over the bar.

His second attempt at getting small glass of Mexico’s finest wasn’t too far behind, but this time just skipping wide of the left post.

As the half wore on, quick breaks and set pieces were still plentiful for the Glovers.

Half chances for both Yussuf and Dan Moss came and went without testing Craig Ross in the visitors’ goal, but Jordan Barnett did force a decent stop at a tight angle.

The play was there, the finish was not… but we’ve heard that before.
The half began to die out with some scrappy decisions breaking up play.

Still, ahead at the interval and another chance to put a side to bed beckons in the next 45 minutes.

Half time: Yeovil Town 1 Woking 0

The second half started just like the first one ended, namely a Gorman shot from distance… oh yeah… and a goal – but not from the Northern Irishman. Marcus, rest easy for now.

The goal was copy and paste from the first, just flip the players around. Wakefield drove a ball across the six-yard line which just screamed ‘bury me’… and you haven’t got invite Tom KNOWLES twice.

There were ‘scenes’, ‘limbs’ and even the odd ‘flame emoji’ in the home end. Don’t tell me I can’t fall in love with footballers. Knowles has found his swag again… and it was wonderful.

What followed was Woking’s first stint of sustained pressure, no more than ten minutes and, as the clock ticked over an hour, Grant Smith hadn’t made a meaningful save.

Crosses rained it, free kicks whipped around him, but all, for now, dealt with by those around him.

A double substitution followed for the Cards as they sought to capitalise on this shred of momentum.

Yeovil responded with Yussuf coming off for top-scorer Joe Quigley.
The Tanzanian had worked hard for his hour, but without much in the way of match-defining razzmatazz .

The game was becoming scrappy, Woking knew how to kill the speed and flow of Yeovil’s game.

As frustrations grew, Glovers’ assistant Terry Skiverton found his way into the referee’s note book.

On the pitch, the Glovers were crying out for some control in the middle of the park. The game was in a lull, in need of a spark.

The home side on the verge in shutting up shop and taking what they’d earned.

A chorus of ‘We want Priestnall out‘ rung through the Thatchers Stand, reminding us that the future of our club still means as much (more?) than what is happening on it.

Further more free kicks won by not so genuine means littered the pitch as Woking knew their only way back in would be if their hosts lost their heads.

80 mins had now passed.

We’re Yeovil going to test their defensive resolve by sitting back or were they going to ease the nerves of those in the stands by continuing to press, hurry and give Woking the troubles they had not had any answers to as yet?

Josh Staunton and Max Hunt headed everything within sight, the full backs hooked another stray ball clear, but by now Quigley was the furthest man forward, no more than ‘Dale Gorman fancies a tequila’ distance from his own goal.

There was always a break away, but each one slightly more laboured than the last as the legs tired.

Each one often halted by Woking player hitting the deck at the slightest whiff of a chasing Glover.

Knowles was taken off with five to go, maybe to protect himself from the trigger happy ref.

86 minutes on the clock, Glovers’ fans will know all to well by now, the nerves are still around.

As the attendance was read out, and the announcement of five additional minutes, a rendition of ‘Allez allez allez’ broke out to help see the boys over the line.

A late debut for Jordan Dyer killed a a few more seconds, Grant Smith made his first meaningful save of the game as Woking continued to huff and puff (but not blow the house down – where have we heard that?) in the final few moments.

In truth it was comfortable, at times fairly pedestrian, the Glovers 2-0 winners with maybe, a little left in the tank.

Full time: Yeovil Town 2 Woking 0

Top-scorer Joe Quigley has been dropped to the substitutes’ bench for tonight’s visit from Woking (7.45pm kick-off).

The striker, who has six goals in ten games this season, is replaced by Adi Yussuf with Tom Knowles called in to the starting line-up in place of Sonny Blu Lo-Everton.

The Watford youngster does not feature in the squad with striker Ben Seymour, on loan from Exeter City, and young midfielder Toby Stephens on the bench.

For the visitors, former Yeovil loanees Tahvon Campbell and Rohan Ince with Jamar Loza on the bench.

Yeovil Town: Grant Smith, Dan Moss,  Josh Staunton, Max Hunt, Jack Robinson, Matt Worthington, Dale Gorman, Jordan Barnett, Tom Knowles, Adi Yussuf, Charlie Wakefield.

Substitutes: Max Evans, Jordan Dyer, Toby Stephens, Ben Seymour, Joe Quigley.

Woking: Ross, Casey, Champion, Diarra, Nwabuokei, Effiong, Kretzschmar, Johnson, Campbell, Block, Ince.
Substitutes:

Lewis Simper has been recalled by his parent club Cambridge United after the League Two club suffered a number of injuries.

The 20-year-old joined on a season-long loan spell, but made just two competitive appearances having suffered with COVID-19 and a leg injury since arriving.

In a statement issued just hours before the home match with Woking, the club said: “Yeovil Town can confirm the Lewis Simper has been recalled from his loan spell by Cambridge United.

“Due to a number of injuries at his parent club, the midfielder now returns with immediate effect.

Lewis Simper during a spell at Concord Rangers last season – we never even had him long enough to get a picture of him in green-and-white!

“The club would like to thank Lewis for his efforts during his time in Somerset and wish him all the best for the future.

The final line of the statement gives the impression that is the last we have seen of Simper, and Cambridge boss, Mark Bonner, spoke at the weekend about how he did not want to bring players back for just one game.

The Us have only one recognised central midfield player, Jensen Weir, available for their League One fixture against Doncaster Rovers tonight, sparking the recall.

Simper appeared off the substitutes’ bench after 84 minutes of last weekend’s 2-0 defeat at Grimsby Town and came on for the final ten minutes of extra time in the FA Cup replay win at W*ymouth, but has otherwise failed to feature.

Darren Sarll will not be the next Carlisle United manager (that is assuming he ever was going to be) after the League Two strugglers appointed ex-Bristol City boss Keith Millen.

The Yeovil Town manager was the favourite for the job with a couple of national bookmakers’ on Monday evening, and was still favourite with BetVictor and 5/1 third favourite with SkyBet this morning.

But, as we did warn that the likelihood was this was just bookies making stuff up to keep things interesting, and it appears it was exactly that.

Millen has signed an 18-month contract with the Cumbrians who are third from bottom of League Two after 14 matches.

It has been a hit and miss start to the National League season for Woking who are ten games in without a draw.

Having picked up three impressive victories over Chesterfield, Notts County and Dagenham & Redbridge, the Cards have lost their last three matches.

That includes an exit from the FA Cup at the hands of Isthmian League Premier Division side Horsham, who played two divisions and 54 places below them.

At the weekend, the dismissal of centre-half Joe McNerney after 58 minutes of the televised match at Maidenhead United led to leaking two late goals to go down to a 3-2 defeat.

The first defeat of the three-match losing run came with a 1-0 defeat at home to league leaders, Grimsby Town.

Former Yeovil Town loanee Tahvon Campbell has been a major part of Woking’s good form.

The 24-year-old made Woking his 11th club having had two loan spells at Huish Park in the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons, scoring twice.

But, he has managed eight goals in his first ten matches for the Cards including doubles against Eastleigh, Chesterfield and Notts County in back-to-back matches.

He’s not scored his side last brace at Notts earlier in the month and has been paired alongside the powerful Inih Effiong, who signed from Notts County in the summer.

FROM THE MANAGER

It is fair to say Woking manager Alan Dowson is a man of few words and speaking to BT Sport after the final whistle of the 3-2 defeat at Maidenhead United last weekend, he was not giving much away.

He said: “You are not going to win games if you concede three goals and we have got a bit of a problem in that area.

“So I was disappointed with us defensively, but apart from that I thought we were in control for most of the game.

It was an improvement (from the FA Cup exit at Horsham) but if you want to be involved you have to win these games.

“But they were well organised and they put the ball in the net, so fair play to them.

“You’ve just got to put every game behind you.

TEAM NEWS

Central defender Joe McNerney, who has been an ever-present since rejoining the club in the summer after six years away at Crawley Town, will be missing on Tuesday night.

He was red-carded for denying a goal-scoring opportunity just before the hour mark in the 3-2 defeat at Maidenhead United at the weekend.

The televised fixture was an eventful one for the 31-year-old who deflected a ball in to his own net for Maidenhead’s first, then equalised when he popped up at the back post and finally saw red having collided with Kane Ferdinand who was through on goal.

Striker George Oakley will also be missing having suffered a broken leg in the win over Chesterfield earlier in the month and will be out for the rest of the season.

The summer signing from Scottish football had struck an impressive partnership alongside ex-Glover Tahvon Campbell up until that point.

A FOOT IN BOTH CAMPS

Tahvon Campbell has already been mentioned in this preview.

The then-West Brom youngster had two fairly forgettable spells at the club in 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons.

He managed a goal in each spell and that was about it to be honest.

Fellow frontman Jamar Loza is another link between the clubs. He played five times on loan from Norwich City in 2015 and returned for his third spell at Woking last season.

Rohan Ince, who made two Yeovil Town appearances in a two-month stint on loan from Chelsea in 2012, arrived from Maidenhead in the summer and is a regular in the Cards’ midfield.

In the Glovers’ squad, top-scorer Joe Quigley had two loan spells at Kingfield whilst an AFC Bournemouth player in the 2015-16 season.

However, these three are far from the only players with a foot in both camps, a few others include:

  • Josh Neufville
  • Jake Gray
  • Kieran Murtagh
  • Nathan Ralph
  • Kevin Betsy
  • Steve Thompson
  • Matt Hayfield
  • Chris Giles
  • Warren Patmore
  • Colin Fielder
  • Kevan Brown
  • Robbie Carroll
  • Richard Nugent
  • Andy Clement
  • Dave Piper
  • Steve Stott
  • Tom White
  • Shaun Donnellan
  • Jamie Pitman
  • Luke Oliver

There are probably more. If you think of any, let us know and we’ll add them to the list.

Two national bookmakers have Yeovil Town manager Darren Sarll among the favourites at League Two side Carlisle United.

SkyBet have the Glovers’ boss as a 2/1 favourite to replace Chris Beech who was sacked with the club in the division’s relegation zone.

BetVictor are also offering 6/4 on Sarll to take over at Brunton Park, although other outlets do not have him anywhere near the running.

BetVictor are offering odds of 6/4 on Darren Sarll to be the next manager at Carlisle United.

‘Next Permanent Manager’ markets are notoriously volatile and it isn’t always based on the most reliable sources.

Other betting companies, including William Hill, don’t have Sarll listed at all with Keith Hill listed as their odds-on favourite.

A little investigative work with some of our northern contacts would suggest that this is probably little more than a couple of speculative punts from bookmakers.

What we can confirm is that manager took charge of training at Huish Park on Monday ahead of tomorrow night’s National League fixture at home to Woking.

Odds quoted in the article are correct at time of writing and subject to change.
