Danny Webb is set to be named the new Yeovil Town manager according to BBC Somerset’s Jack Killah.
The Senior Sports Reporter for Somerset tweeted the below:
Webb, who played 7 times for Yeovil between 2006 and 2007, has been Assistant Manager at Chesterfield since 2021.
Richard Dryden will manage this weekends match against Woking, but we await official confirmation from the club.
Why the hell do we need an ex yeovil player to be a manager? Look what happened with Darren way, another load of rubbish, we need proper managers, that has experience in the national league or league 2… For the likes of Steve Cotterell or Phil Brown.. They have very good representations…
Errr, 10 games vs circa 250 games for Yeovil is hardly a comparison and I’d never associate Danny Webb in the same vein as the awesome player Darren Way. But I take your other point…
As a manager…or head coach maybe…different story? We wait to see.
Like Benji noted this is underwhelming and not a statement of intent. Let’s face it we are no longer one to watch YTFC…we are bang average National League YTFC in every way and have been since dropping out of the EFL.
I think the word ‘underwhelmed’ comes to mind… I can see the thought process, but I can see this ending in tears. I was really hoping for a statement appointment, and this just isn’t that. Will happily be proven wrong however!
Nothing but very positive comments as far as I can see from (gutted) Chesterfield fans on FB. Let’s give the guy a chance.
You’re right, Jem. It is more the initial frustration that it wasn’t an anticipated “name” and his credentials are not exactly those that fits ‘manager with experience’. FWIW, I had hoped it would be Jon Brady announced. On the face of it he seems to have what is needed, but who’s to say he was considered or even applied. That was my idea of an ideal manager to take us forward – not those making the decisions (thankfully!) and if DW is the man, I hope he will be successful.
Just a thought……….I hadn’t heard of Gary Johnson when he was appointed………….!!
Very true!
Personally I was hoping for somebody with a proven track record lower down the pyramid of implementing a style of football and winning the odd promotion but I can see the appeal of somebody with a bit of name recognition and a lot of experience at this level. It is a risk though, and he isn’t a very experienced manager at all so if he finds himself front and centre and learns the hard way that he isn’t leadership material, then we’re back in the NLS next season without question. I just hope the ownership can enlighten us on their recruitment process so we can gauge how comprehensive their search was and what led them to DW.
However, his dad was a top manager for us at the turn of the century and almost certainly would have been the guy to lead us in to the Football League had he not legged it to Southend, so maybe the Webb family have some unfinished business in Somerset. I’m trying to think of how many clubs have been managed by both father and son – the Johnsons are Bristol City and the Cloughs at Derby are all I’ve got at the moment. Anybody else?
I’m sure there are many who did not see DW as the man they’d choose for the job but, let’s just get behind him and the team and see what happens. COYG 💚
Personally I’m going to wait to make judgment after I’ve actually seen him manage yeovil.lets give him a chance
He’s quality and will be sorely missed up here. Cracking guy and i wish him all the best. Will be keeping an eye on results from now on.
