Club Background

Southport eh ? Paris of the North. They really really hate being called Scouseport – which of course simply encourages everyone (by which we mean Hugh, Badger and Ciderspace!) to do just that. They’ll argue endlessly about it, showing you road atlases, quoting post codes and obscure council documents and boundary changes without realising they undermine their case with every word as the whole conversation is conducted in a heavy Scouse accent. They have competed in the Liverpool Senior Cup** before, so Scouseport it is.

Southport is an ex-league club, failed in a bid for re-election and were replaced by Wigan in 1978. When you get to the ground there is very little evidence of the old league club that once stood there, with plenty of change having taken place in the past 30 years. Out on the main street you’ll find the entrance to all of the clubs shops, offices and bars from the main facade which is effectively the back of the main stand. Parking is a little tricky, and is only available as on-street parking – there is absolutely no car park whatsoever. You’ll find the welcome in the bar a sincere one, and getting served easy due to the orderly queue that is formed. Once in the ground, there bizarrely appears to be segregation in force for all games, despite the design of the ground and the size and nature of the crowds making this an irrational decision. As a result you’re stuck on a open terrace where there is zero atmosphere and where if you are playing in the winter, the sunset makes viewing the game a near impossibility.

Southport is on the coast, so it does get breezy – you have been warned!

With the exception of their more elderly support you’ll not find anyone to talk to about those League days, as they spent 15 years in the Northern League without ever threatening to do anything except drop further until 1992-93 when they suddenly won promotion to the Conference. During their first three seasons they threatened big things, finishing third, fourth and sixth, but their next major achievement came in 1998 when they reached the FA Trophy final at Wembley, losing to Cheltenham Town in front of 10,000 Scousers…..sorry, Lancastrians.

In 2006, Southport became a full-time club under the management of current Chesterfield boss Paul Cook, who speaks with a strong and often raspy Scouse accent despite being from Kirkby, which historically is Lancashire and now is part of Merseyside – they’re big on their history in Southport. Cook assembled a complete new team in the Conference but results saw him dispensed of by January 2007. His replacement, former Nottingham Forest and Manchester United striker Peter Davenport, could not save them from relegation back to Conference North where they remained and by 2008 returned to part-time status.

It took until the 2009-10 season for the Sandgrounders to return to non-League’s top flight and they only survived relegation in their first season back due to the expulsion of Ru$hden & Diamonds.  They had a series of managers some of which you may have heard of including former Premier League defender Alan Wright, who scored an own goal in Yeovil’s favour for Nottingham Forest in that League One play-off semi-final second leg, and Alex Russell, the ex-Glovers’ midfielder not our resident cartoonist. Oh, John Coleman, now in charge at Aldershot Town, had a stint as well, and all managed to retain their Premier Division status until April 2017 when they were finally relegated back to National League North.

The first season back in regional football saw a changing of the guard in the boardroom as long-serving chairman Charlie Clapham stood down, replaced by local accountant and supporter, James Treadwell. Then, in 2023 it was announced the club was being taken over by the Big Help Group, a body which ran local food banks with its CEO Peter Mitchell taking over as chairman.

On 27 October 2023, it was announced that Big Help Group had acquired Southport FC and become the majority shareholder following the purchase of Ian Kyle’s shares. The former chairman has subsequently been succeeded by Big Help Group’s CEO, Peter Mitchell. To say the move was a surprise to supporters would be an understatement and it didn’t last long with the club announcing in April 2025 that Big Help and Peter Mitchell were no longer involved in the club. If you want an insight in to what was going on there, read the investigation by the Liverpool Post – click here.

Last summer, the club was officially in the ownership of businessmen David Cunningham and Kieran Malone and currently former Crystal Palace midfielder Neil Danns is in charge at Haig Avenue.

Directions To The Ground

General

A vintage Victorian seaside resort which has had a few hard winters – definitely not as crumbling as some, but a bit worn around the edges. The town centre is probably a half-an-hour tramp from the stadium but, if you have the time, it is worth a look. Lord Street, a wide open boulevard, is the main shopping street and there’s the UK’s second-longest pier, more than three times the size of Weston-super-Mare and only topped by Southend. More a good walk than arcade glitz, but there’s flashing lights and sugary treats not far from the pier if that is what you seek.

By Road

Take M5 and then the M6, and exit at Junction (26) sign posted for the M58. Follow the M58 until junction (3), and take the A570. Stay on the A570 through Ormskirk (one-way), and this will take you, after about 5 miles into the Kew district of Southport. At the roundabout with McDonalds on the left take the third exit, Scarisbrick New Road (A570) you will see the ground on the right, it is situated just past the College (KGV). Turn right at first set of lights into Haig Avenue.  Sat Nav: PR8 6JZ.

Parking: The club’s small car park is for players and officials only. Therefore, supporters have to park in the surrounding streets. There are usually many spaces under a couple of minutes walk but watch out for parking restrictions around the streets and expect spaces to fill up quickly.

There are plenty of car parks in Southport town centre which is probably a 20 to 30-minute walk to the stadium. Your closest options are Tulketh Street (PR8 1AN) or at the Central 12 Retail Park (PR9 0TY).

By Rail

The nearest station to the ground is Meols Cop which is about a 15-20 minute walk away. If you are travelling from Yeovil, you will need to depart from Pen Mill and go change at Bristol and Birmingham New Street as far as Wigan North Western. Get off at Wigan North Western, leave the station and cross the road to Wigan Wallgate station where Northern run services to Southport. The next stop after Meols Cop is Southport which is around a 30 minute walk to the stadium and located in the town centre.

To walk from Meols Cop, you are best coming out of the main station entrance, turning left into the pedestrian area, walking up to Eastbank Street, turn left (you will see KFC in front of you) and then keep walking straight for about 1 ½ miles down Eastbank Street, onto Scarisbrick New Road and then Haig Avenue is on the left.

By Bus

There are several buses which run from Southport town centre down Scarisbrick New Road which is only a short walk from Haig Avenue. If you are looking for a bus operator, you are seeking Arriva:

300 – Southport-Liverpool
375 – Southport-Wigan

Alpha Southport – 01704 537777

Address: The Guest House, 16 Union Street, PR9 0QE. Telephone: 01704 537660. Facebook. Map.

Beer Den: A micropub occupying two shop units just around the corner from the British Lawnmower Museum – yes, that is an actual thing – run by the Parker Brewery. It offers three real ales and a small craft reg range. Only open from 2pm on Saturdays though.
Address: Beer Den 65-67 Duke St PR8 5BT. Telephone: 01704 329007. Facebook. Map.

Likelihood the Natives Will Understand You:High (they are all used to the BBC after all), but again your hosts’ conversation may present problems. Just remember ‘la’ means ‘lad’ or ‘mate’ and does not denote a musical note.

Top-Tip: As seaside towns go, Southport is definitely one of the better presented. There’s plenty to range from Funland and Fun Palace (note, this may or may not be your idea of fun) if you are looking for something in the flashing lights range, but if you want something a bit more sedate a walk to the pier or around the Marine Lake is probably for you. There’s plenty of good quality beaches in the area with Ainsdale the most local and Formby a little farther afield.

Other Points Of Interest: Southport is proudly home to the British Lawnmower Museum — because when you’ve spent 90 minutes watching two National League North sides cut up a pitch in February, you may as well go and see some machinery that does it properly. Word is former Yeovil skipper Josh Staunton would consider it a pilgrimage site. Warning, it is only open until 1pm on Saturdays, so get in early.

Yes, it is a real thing.
