Club Background
There was an Aveley club from 1927 playing in local leagues. Was it the same one as now? The official history lays claim but obliquely concedes the club was “reformed” after the Second World War – “reformed” covers a lot of potentially different circumstances. In practical terms it became a Senior football club in 1949 upon joining the London League. That season it also moved into Mill Field.
In 1957 it switched to the Delphian League, and when that folded in 1963 moved on again into the Athenian League. 1970-71 was the club’s most successful season to that point, reaching the FA Cup Proper for the first time, knocked out in Round One by Yeovil Town, and as Champions of Athenian League Division One promoted to the Premier Division.
The massive restructuring of lower league football in the early Seventies with the ending of the division between Amateur and (Semi-) Professional status saw the Millers join the Isthmian League in 1973. There it remained, with a handful of promotions and relegations, until 2004 when it moved to the Southern League Division One East. Two seasons of struggle followed and it left, returning to the Isthmian.
There it remained until 2021-23 saw a double promotion, up from Division One North as Champions and then up again from the Premier Division through the play-offs, defeating Canvey Island and then Hornchurch, to become rather unexpected members of National League South.
In 2017 the Millers left Mill Field and moved into its brand new home of Parkside which cost £4.8 million.

Ticketing
When the fixture that had been rearranged for Monday 12th of February was cancelled by Aveley they stated it was because work needed to be done on the ground so the match could be segregated. However, rightly or wrongly, Yeovil Town OS is saying the rearrangement of the rearrangement for Monday 4th March is not being segregated – make of that what you will. Tickets can be bought through the online ticketing portal HERE (note there is a booking fee).

Directions To The Ground
General
Aveley is right on the very edge of Greater London just inside the unitary authority of Thurrock which was carved out of the County of Essex in 1998. Sitting in amongst the ghastly swathe of horribleness that is the mixture of wasteland and deadbeat settlements along the Greater London / Essex border, Aveley fits right in. It is a place of no discernible merit whatsoever with a population of just under 10,000.
By Road
From Huish Park to Parkside is around 160 miles. It’s another of our trips this season where there’s not much difference in mileage whichever way one chooses to circumnavigate the M25. In this case anticlockwise is a little shorter but has the disadvantage of tolls to cross the Thames.
If approaching from the North exit the M25 at Junction 30; from the South it’s Junction 31. From whichever you need to get onto Ship Lane which takes you into Aveley. At the roundabout at the end of Ship Lane take the second exit to go eastwards along the High Street. Keep straight on as the High Street becomes Stifford Road.
At the next roundabout take the first exit onto Lance Corporal Nicky Mason Way (B1335). After a third of a mile at the next roundabout take the third exit onto Park Lane. Parkside and its car park are almost immediately to you right.
Parking
The car park at the stadium has around 220 spaces and is on a first come first served basis.
By Rail
Believe it or not Aveley manages to be (almost) in London but not have a railway station. Not only does it not have one but the nearest are basically three (+) miles away. For those with no alternative but to train it the alighting options are:
Ockendon (2.8 miles), Purfleet (2.8 miles), Chafford Hundred (3.2 miles – there’s a potentially slightly shorter route but that would rely on some sections of restricted access/private road) and Rainham (3.6 miles) – these distances are walking, bus routes where existing or taxis are likely to be longer. All these stations are served by c2c with trains running out of London Fenchurch Street and a few out of London Liverpool Street (but the latter only at weekends). All these stations generally have two services an hour outside of peak commuter times with journey times roughly plus or minus half an hour depending how far out they are from Fenchurch Street.
By Bus
All the (very limited) bus services in Aveley appear to stop running late afternoon / very early evening except the No. 372 operated by Stagecoach London and that doesn’t go nearer the ground than the High Street 15 minutes walk away.

Food & Drink
General
As far as can see there are only four pubs in the town: two in the centre, The Old Ship Inn (which according to CAMRA doesn’t open on a Monday!) and The Top House (below); the third, Park Tavern, is a smidgeon under a mile (20 minutes walk) North-West of the stadium in a housing estate; past the Park Tavern and at the very northernmost tip of Aveley is Sir Henry’s (around 25 minutes walk from the ground) which classifies itself as a Restaurant & Bar rather than a pub. (The Crown & Anchor in the High Street, still marked on Google Maps, has been closed and boarded up since September 2023.)

There’s two bars in the main stand area and an additional outside bar next to one of the goals.
Local Pubs
Top House: In central Aveley 0.7 of a mile (so around 15 minutes walk) from the stadium. No sign it does food. Multinational industrial keg only. Pool table, darts, jukebox, Sports TV, car park. Opens from noon – 11.00 p.m. every day except Sunday when closes at 10.30 p.m.

Other Points Of Interest: The most complete mammoth remains discovered in the UK were unearthed in Aveley. In the 200,000 years since mistakenly stumbling into the place and instantly deciding death was its preferred option Aveley has only gotten worse.
