Ian Perkins (Page 100)

I’ve adhered to Gloverscast Rule #2 and ‘slept on it.’

A late Tom Knowles (or was it Charlie Wakefield?) goal saw us pick up a 1-0 friendly win at the Cygnet Healthcare Stadium against Taunton Town last night.

I don’t think we learned much more than we did on Saturday against Forest Green Rovers. We defended resolutely and weathered a storm at the start of the second half. There was a clear focus on us maintaining a narrow shape without the ball and sticking to a tight defensive unit. With Josh Staunton in front of the back four, we look like we’ll be difficult to break down. Staunton got 90 minutes under his belt for the first time in a long time last night, and Monday’s Gloverscast guest is really looking the part already.

The first half was largely forgettable. We tried to keep the ball at points but we we’re lacklustre in the final third and didn’t really create much. There was a lot of passing around the back line before the fullbacks crossed to the Taunton keeper from deep. The trialist, who we are fairly sure is Zeli Ismael, showed glimpses but didn’t stand out.

We were set up differently than Saturday’s game, with Lewis Simper in behind Reuben Reid given a bit of license to roam. We looked like we were still trying to figure out this system and learning how to play together, which is normal when you’ve gone through a rebuild.

We looked better in the second half when Tom Knowles, Joe Quigley and Dale Gorman came on and we reverted to the 4-4-2 shape. We saw more of Jordan Barnett and  Alex Bradley trying to get forward and eventually our pressure and tired Taunton legs saw us get the winner.

My key takeaways from last night:
  • We didn’t create a lot
  • We didn’t allow Taunton to create a lot
  • Taunton had a very good left back and their Number 9 gave Luke Wilkinson a battle too
  • We look very fit
  • We’re taking the Sports Science stuff seriously
  • It was nice to be around humans at football again
  • Don’t fall in love with footballers

On today’s episode of the Gloverscast, Ian, Ben and Dave have a brief chat about the Forest Green Rovers friendly.

And then, Ben chats to Yeovil Town midfielder Josh Staunton. Last summer’s marquee signing talks injury, Lee Collins and the forthcoming season in this plentiful chat.

Thanks to Josh for talking to Ben at 9am the morning after a game, top man!

Yeovil’s first friendly at Huish Park ended in defeat at the hands of Forest Green Rovers this afternoon.

A 14th minute strike from Jamille Matt was enough for Forest Green although Yeovil put in a decent performance against the League Two side and had some good opportunities.

Forest Green Rovers kick off the EFL campaign next Saturday and will probably be a little disappointed with the performance against the Glovers, given it was only the second friendly of the Glovers season preparation.

First Half

The Glovers should have had the lead when Reuben Reid set Charlie Wakefield through on goal, but Yeovil’s new signing couldn’t get the ball under control as he was closed down by Rover’s keeper, Luke McGhee.

Reid had the ball in the net for Yeovil in the 11th minute, but it was disallowed after he pretty much caught the ball before finishing.

Jamille Matt gave Forest Green the lead in the 14th minute with a simple finish from a cross on the right hand side. Matt snuck in front of his marker to leave Grant Smith rooted to the spot.

Reid another effort ruled out in the 38th minute. A signature Tom Knowles strike drew a good save from McGhee and Reid was given offside after putting the rebound away.

Half Time: Yeovil Town 0 – 1 Forest Green Rovers

Second Half

Yeovil were forced into a 55th minute change as an injury to Mark Little saw him make way for Alex Bradley.

Reid should have equalised for Yeovil just after the hour. Luke Wilkinson’s pressure on McGhee saw the Forest Green keeper spill the ball to the feet or Reid who could only find the Thatchers stand.

Jordan Barnett very nearly lobbed his own keeper with a sensational effort in the 64th minute. Grant Smith saved his left back’s blushes, heading the ball wide.

Glovers’ boss Darren Sarll made 5 changes in the 70th minute with three trialists entering the fray. Two of the trialist Harlain Mbayo and Deshane Dalling also played against Stratford Town last weekend.

Yeovil did have a late opportunity to equalise after a good cross from Wakefield found Dalling in the box. He laid the ball off to Simper whose shot was charged down.

Former Yeovil Town keeper Liam O’Brien wants to repay the faith Stratford Town chairman Jed/Ged/Gerard McCrory has shown in him since recovering from his injury nightmare.

The shot stopper joined Stratford in November last year, and speaking to the Stratford-upon-Avon Herald, O’Brien said how he had contemplated quitting football after the reoccurrence of an injury in the 3-0 win against Wrexham in February 2020.

He said: “Before joining Stratford Town I nearly gave up football completely. When I was at Yeovil I pulled the quad off my bone and it required an operation. I had the operation and it took around four-and-a-half months to get back fit. I started training again, played two games and then got the same injury again. So I needed another operation and then another four-and-a-half months to get back fit. By that time Covid-19 hit, I was out of contract and ready to give it all up. From going from almost retiring to getting the love for football back, I cannot wait to get going. That phone call from Jed gave me a massive lift and playing for Stratford Town is something I’m really looking forward to. Even if I had offers from elsewhere, the answer is no because I want to repay the faith Jed has shown in me.”

O’Brien will come up against Yeovil Town when the Glovers head to Stratford on the 24th of July for a preseason friendly.
