Where are they now? Yeovil Town manager Darren Way's first teammates at Huish Park - Somerset LiveBen Smith has spoken about his regret at leaving Yeovil Town just weeks before Gary Johnson arrived at Huish Park and started a dynasty at the club.

The former Glovers’ midfielder arrived at the club as a teenager in 1998 and was part of the Glovers’ squad which was pipped by Rushden & Diamonds for the Conference title in 2000, before leaving to join Southend United in summer 2001.

He spoke to the Gloverscast about his departure following his former Yeovil manager David Webb to Essex.

Smith said: “I look at that young, vibrant team that Gary put together and I am pretty sure I would have fitted quite well in to that and it would have helped me grow up because of the professionalism he put in place and the way the team grew together.

“I don’t see any reason why I could not have been part of that with Darren (Way) and Lee Johnson in midfield, I look at Paul Terry who went there later and did well, and I could have done that role quite easily.

“But, who knows? Gary Johnson could have said ‘No, you’re not for me’, but if you could have guaranteed me I would stay there.  If I had a one-year contract offer I would have done it 100%, but when you get the opportunity to go to a club in the league above after having a pretty poor to the end of the season, you can’t really turn it down.”

The average travel time of a Yeovil Town supporter reduced dramatically as Hartlepool United saw off Gary Johnson’s Torquay United on penalties in a dramatic play-off final at Ashton Gate.

The Poolies won it 5-4 on penalties with Yeovil-born midfielder  Matt Buse missing the all-important spot kick for the Devon side.

The game went to extra time after Torquay goalkeeper Luca Covolan scored a dramatic equaliser in the 95th minute

Hartlepool had looked like they were destined to win it in ordinary time after Luke Armstrong, who is on loan from Salford City, scored his 15th goal for the club  gave them a 35th minute lead.

The North East side were on top for the majority of normal time but as the clock began to tick down, Johnson’s men began to lay siege on the Pools’ goal.

It looked as if they had weathered the storm  until in the fifth minute of injury time when a high ball in to the box was met by a glancing header from the Brazilian Covolan, who had gone forward for an earlier set piece.

In the shoot-out, neither side scored the first two spot kicks with Covolan saving both Hartlepool’s opening two efforts.

Former Yeovil Town midfielder Ed Upson has signed a one-year contract at League Two side Newport County.

The 31-year-old, who was part of the Glovers’ side which won promotion to the Championship in 2013, was released by Bristol Rovers following their relegation to League Two last season.

He links up with another former Yeovil Town midfielder Matt Dolan at the South Wales club who has lost Josh Sheehan, who had a spell on loan at Huish Park, and Josh Labadie from the side which reached the League Two play-off final in May.

Former Yeovil Town midfielder Ben Smith has said he believes the Glovers would have “comfortably” beaten Rushden & Diamonds to the Conference title in 2000 if manager David Webb had not left.

The former Chelsea player and manager quit in September 2000 to re-join Southend United having overseen the club’s transition from part-time to full-time football.

He left a side which went on to compete with big-spending Rushden under the management of Steve Thompson as caretaker boss and then Colin Addison, but fell six points short.

Speaking to the Gloverscast on an episode due out tomorrow, Smith said: “We had a young team and he (Webb) had us on a tight leash, whereas Colin was a really good coach, great manager good guy but he gave you a lot more freedom.

“When David was in charge, we were the fittest team (in the division). I was the fittest I have been in my whole career, that was the hardest pre-season I have ever done even after playing 17-18 years.

“That just tapered away as the season went on, especially for people like me who were not behaving themselves and getting a bit excited and we just lacked that bit of nous at the end.

“My form tailed off because I was enjoying myself too much and not training as hard as I should have done, and that was my fault not Colin’s, but at that age David Webb was certainly the right man for me at the time.”

Don’t miss the Gloverscast  on Monday to hear Ben talk about his time at Huish Park, stories from his time under David Webb and his thoughts about leaving Huish Park just before Gary Johnson‘s arrival.

Winger Charlie Wakefield has become Yeovil Town‘s latest signing after arriving on a one-year deal.

The 23-year-old was released by National League rivals Bromley at the end of the season having started the campaign at Wealdstone.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the former Chelsea youngster said: “I’m just excited to show the fans, what I’m capable of doing, what I can offer the team.

“I’m a unique player because I’ve been blessed with pace, and I want to be direct which will excite people. So, I’m looking forward to seeing the fans and them seeing me play.”

It is not the first time Wakefield has linked up with Glovers’ boss Darren Sarll. Sarll signed the then-19-year-old on a season long loan from Chelsea at the start of the 2017-18 season, but a recurring muscle injury meant he did not make an appearance for the Hertfordshire side.

The following year he had a spell in League One at Coventry City making eight substitute appearances before being released in October 2020 when he joined Wealdstone.

He turned out twice against the Glovers in the 2020-21 campaign, making his Wealdstone debut in the 2-2 draw at Huish Park in October and then coming on for the last five minutes of Bromley’s 2-1 win at Huish Park in March.

He was released by Bromley earlier this month following the expiry of his contract.

Yeovil Town chairman Scott Priestnall has valued the club and its assets at £4.285 million in CV Leisure Ltd’s accounts for the 12-month period from September 1, 2019.

CV Leisure is the company owned by the chairman and former Yeovil Town FC director Errol Pope, which has the majority shareholding in the  football club. The company lists its tangible assets as increasing from £0 to £4.285m in the 12-month period from September 1, 2019.

The accounts also show the company secured a loan facility of £1.35m from MSP Capital, a property finance firm based in Poole, Dorset, which will expire on December 17 this year.

In paperwork filed in September 2019, it was shown that these charges were secured against land at Huish Park, meaning MSP Capital would have the right to take control of the land should the club fail to repay any of the money it owes.

Speaking to Somerset Live at the time the charges were confirmed, Mr Priestnall said: “It was basically put in place as a facility to help us move forward with the land. When you take over something, you have an idea as to how much it’s going to cost and we’ve had to take on some of the debts and losses from last year.”

“You have to make sure that you’re going into it with your eyes open, and when we’ve got an asset there and we want to move that asset forward, you have to make sure you’ve got the tools to move that forward quickly should we need to and I think that’s the key, it’s about being able to react.

“Those charges may well change. They may well come off over the next couple of months depending on what we decide to do, depending on how those conversations go with covenant holders, we may well use that facility for that purpose or there might be another deal that we can do that means we don’t have to have another facility on that at all.”

Earlier this week, the Gloverscast revealed the club has taken a loan of £689,000 from Sport England “to replace the lost revenue from this season.”

Defender Morgan Williams has said he is looking to “put a mark” at Yeovil Town having joined the club permanently.

The 21-year-old, who had two loan spells at Huish Park whilst with Coventry City, became the club’s first signing of the summer having been announced on Monday.

Speaking to the club’s YouTube channel, he said: “It is a fresh start for me and I really want to put my mark on the club.
“I need to knuckle down in pre-season and get game time in and push on, but obviously the main aim is to get Yeovil to League Two and get promotion, that will be massive. It will be a great experience to be playing in front of (the fans) again, it has been a difficult time for the last year so I can’t wait to be back playing in front of fans again.”

Williams was released from Coventry at the end of last season and had dropped a hint that he was coming back to South Somerset with a post on his Instagram last week.

Defender Morgan Williams has become Yeovil Town‘s first signing of the season.

As exclusively revealed (guessed at?) by the Gloverscast last week, the 21-year-old has returned to South Somerset following his release by Championship Coventry City at the end of last season.

His four appearances whilst on loan with the Glovers this season were the only football Williams saw this season, albeit during a bleak period at the end of October and the start of November.

The youngster played in home defeats against Chesterfield and Hartlepool United, who both went on to make the National League play-offs, and the 1-1 draw at Woking.

He was also part of the side which earned an FA Cup win at Bromley thanks to a last-gasp winner from Gabby Rogers.

The season before he made three appearances including an impressive debut in a 2-0 win at home to Halifax Town.

Reuben Reid and Albi Skendi will be at Yeovil Town next season after the club confirming that options in their contract had been triggered.

In an update on players issued on Friday, the club also confirmed that midfielder Emmanuel Sonupe is out of contract with no indication he will be retained, which suggests he has not been.

Lawson D’Ath has been invited to continue his rehabilitation at Huish Park.

Matt Worthington has been offered a new deal but is yet to sign it and it appears youngster Alex John has been let go after his contract expired.

The updated added: “Discussions are underway with individuals from the above out of contract and loan lists.”

This would suggest the possibility of a return for goalkeeper Adam Smith and full-back Michael Kelly, who were released by Forest Green Rovers and Bristol Rovers respectively at the end of last season.

Chris Dagnall has linked up with former Yeovil Town team-mate Carl Dickinson at Hanley Town, the club has confirmed today.

Speaking to his new club’s website, Dagnall spoke about the influence of playing alongside Dickinson, who took over as manager at Hanley after retiring from playing at the end of last season.

He said: “He’s been a massive influence, me and Carl spoke quite a bit towards the end of last season about once he agreed to become the manager here and what he planned to do going forward, asked if I would be interested.”

“With me not being too far locally to the area it was definitely something that interested me after a few discussions I’m here.”

The 35-year-old played 25 times for the Glovers this season, scoring once in the 2-0 home win over Altrincham in February, and spent the latter part of the campaign in a deeper midfield role.

Last season, Dagnall played 22 times for Darren Sarll having joined in October 2019 following his release by Tranmere Rovers.

Hanley will be the 12th club of Dagnall’s career which began at Tranmere as a 17-year-old in 2003 and has seen him play for Rochdale, Barnsley, Scunthorpe United and Crewe Alexandra. He even had a stint with Kerala Blasters in the Indian Super League in 2015.

Stoke-on-Trent-based Hanley will play next season in the Midland League Premier Division at Step 5 in the football pyramid.

Everyone at the Gloverscast wishes Daggers well for his new club – now someone arrange that pre season friendly already!!!
