A survivor of the Hillsborough disaster will speak about his battle with mental health at a webinar organised by the Yeovil Town Community Sports Trust (YTCST) next week.

Martin Roberts was a teenager in April 1989 when the disaster happened at an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest leading to the death of 97 supporters.

He now delivers a talk, A Walk in My Shoes, which focuses on the importance of prioritising mental health and how leaders, players, staff, coaches, and parents/carers within the football community can take key steps to support themselves and those in their care.

The free webinar takes place next Monday 14th November between 6.30pm – 7.30pm. To register visit www.thefmha.com/events.

Martin said: “I am absolutely thrilled to have been invited by Yeovil Town Community Sports Trust and The Football Mental Health Alliance to share my personal story. As many will know it was a football match on the 15th of April 1989 that nearly cost me my life and did so tragically for 97 other fellow football supporters.

Some 30 years later it totally defined my personal and professional life. A purpose in life is a life with purpose and I certainly have found mine. I commend both organisations for taking the lead on mental health in football and can’t wait to share how all those interested in football can take key steps to support themselves and those around them.

YTCST Manager Sara Bradley said: “Here at Yeovil Town Community Sports Trust, the mental wellbeing of all those in our community is a huge priority for us. We are only too aware of the significant impact the events of the last couple of years and beyond have had and continue to have on the mental health of society.

This webinar will allow people across the whole of our community to learn and implement key tips around mental health from a recognised expert.

Danny Matharu, founder of The Football Mental Health Alliance and a grassroots football coach, said: “We are delighted to be working with Yeovil Town Community Sports Trust – an organisation that is truly committed not only to providing excellent educational opportunities but also to supporting the welfare of all those in their community holistically. It is widely recognised that early intervention is key when it comes to maintaining good mental health, so we hope this webinar can help in educating and supporting the mental health of all those who register.

The plan is for this webinar to be the first in a series across a whole year, offered alongside a full suite of mental health support products for all those who interact with and are interested in football.

The young Glovers picked up a 3-0 win away at Wimborne Town last weekend to move up to third in the division and will be looking for three more points against an opponent who have suffered a number of heavy defeats this season.

The Ringwood-based outfit lost their first two matches of the season 11-0 at league leaders Bridgwater United and 7-1 against Cirencester Town, but picked up a 3-1 home win over Mangotsfield United last weekend.

The young Glovers took the lead after 25 minutes against Wimborne Town with Charlie Bateson getting his third league goal of the season.

The striker has six in all competitions after bagging a hat-trick in the recent FA Youth Cup win at Bovey Tracey.

Alex Stevens and substitute Josh Haskett added goals in the second half to seal the win which moves the Under-18s up the division after four matches, albeit with some in the division having played just one match.

Yeovil Town Under-18s: Robert Hollard, Josh Sutton (for Harry Lock, 75), Max Dyer, Jacob Shore, Harrison Foster, Jake Graziano (for Joshua Haskett, 85), Jack Bareham, Ryan Price, Charlie Bateson (for Nathan Hart, 70), Benjani Junior (for Mikey Archibald, 65), Alex Stevens (for Harry Evans, 85).

Yeovil Town Under-18s travel to Wimborne Town in search of their first win of the South West Counties Youth League win this weekend.

The young Glovers’ opponents have only played once this season, picking up a 2-1 win against Ringwood-based BRS Coaching Youth, who lost their other fixtures 7-1 and 11-0.

The match takes place at Blandford School in Blandford Forum at 10.30am on Saturday 8th October.

In the week, there were wins for Elite Player Development Programme (EPDP), run by Yeovil College in partnership with the club, with the first team running out 4-1 winners against Exeter College 2nd XI.

Charlie Bateson scored twice with Josh Sutton and Aiden Skiverton also on target. The EPDP 2nd XI won 5-0 at home to against Bridgwater and Taunton College’s 3rd XI.

The age group teams representing the Yeovil Town Community Sports Trust are also in action this weekend with the Under-11s and Under-12s facing their opponents from Paulton Rovers, whilst the Under-13s, Under-15s and Under-16s play Saints South West in the Junior Premier League.

Teams representing the Yeovil Town Community Sports Trust are back in action in the Junior Premier League this weekend.

The Under-11s and Under-12s teams will take on their counterparts from Saints South West, an organisation based in Devon which appears to be affiliated to Southampton (they play in their kit colours and share a nickname, at least) albeit nothing is mentioned of them on their website.

The Trust’s Under-13s, Under-14s, Under-15s and Under-16s teams will all take on teams from the South Gloucestershire Regional Talent Centre in their respective age categories.

Good luck to all those turning out in green and white this weekend.

P.S. There’s no fixture for the Yeovil Town Under-18s after they played in the FA Youth Cup on Thursday night. Read more about that – here.

Yeovil Town Under-18s host their Bridgwater United counterparts in the South West Counties League at Alvington today (10.30am kick-off).

The young Glovers will be looking to get a victory on the board having drawn their first two matches of the season.

In the Junior Premier League, the age group teams representing Yeovil Town Community Sports Trust are also in action with the Under-13s, Under-14s, Under-15s and Under-16s all facing Torquay United.

The Under-12s will play Taunton Town while the Trust’s Under-11s are taking part in an inter-squad friendly match this weekend.

Yeovil Town Under-18s were forced to settle for a point having been pegged back by a late equaliser at Swindon Supermarine this weekend.

Striker Charlie Bateson made it two goals in as many matches with an early strike in what was described as “a controlled and positive performance” in the South West Counties Youth League fixture in Wiltshire.

However, a late equaliser from the home side means the young Glovers are in fifth place in the table (if you look at them in mid-September) after just two matches.

They face Bridgwater United at Alvington next Saturday 24th September with a 10.30am kick-off.

Their next opponents had an 11-0 home win over Ferndown-based BRS Coaching Under-18s, who look likely to be the division’s whipping boys having lost 7-1 in their previous match.

Yeovil Town Under-18s: Robert Hollard, Mason Hunter, Max Dyer, Jacob Shore (for Joshua Haskett, 75), Harrison Foster, Jake Graziano (for Joshua Sutton, 75), Sam Hodges, Jack Bareham (for Nathan Hart, 85), Charlie Bateson (for Aidan Skiverton, 55), Benjani Junior, Ethan O’Sullivan.

The teams representing the Yeovil Town Community Sports Trust got their Junior Premier League season underway on Saturday.

There were victories for the Under-11s and Under-12s against Bridgwater United and for the Under-14s and Under-15s against Exeter Regional Talent Centre (RTC) with plenty of goals on display, apparently.

The Trust don’t publicise scorelines because that’s not what it’s all about, but with four out of six age group sides winning sounds pretty good, right?

U11’s v Bridgwater United – Won
U12’s v Bridgwater United – Won
U13’s v Exeter RTC – Drew
U14’s v Exeter RTC – Won
U15’s v Exeter RTC – Won
U16’s v Exeter RTC – Lost

Having had their opening day fixtures postponed due to the death of The Queen, teams representing the Yeovil Town Community Sports Trust get their season underway tomorrow (September 17th).

The Trust’s Under-11s and Under-12s will face their counterparts from Bridgwater Town in the Junior Premier League (JPL), with its Under-13s, Under-14s, Under-15s and Under-16s playing the Exeter Regional Talent Centre’s (RTC) sides.

YTCST Under-12s v Bridgwater Town Under-12s
YTCST Under-13s v Exter RTC Under-13s
YTCST Under-14s v Exter RTC Under-14s
YTCST Under-15s v Exter RTC Under-15s
YTCST Under-16s v Exter RTC Under-16s

The Trust’s JPL teams are run in conjunction with its existing Talent ID Centre programme within the region as well as our Advanced Talent ID Centre’s which were established with the aim of developing local players.

The JPL is run in a very similar way to Academy level football with the only difference being the incentive to play for league points and participate in cup competitions.

All of the Trust’s players have the opportunity to represent Yeovil Town Community Sports Trust and Yeovil Town Football Club at a competitive level.

Fixtures are played on a Saturday morning and therefore do not conflict with local leagues who operate on a Sunday as we believe that it is important for the Trust to work alongside local grassroots clubs in order to help develop young footballers within the area.
