Stockport County

Not many would have thought that Yeovil Town would complete the double over National League big-spenders Stockport County. But that’s exactly what Charlie Lee’s Glovers managed yesterday. Here are Ian’s Five Conclusions from an excellent game at Huish Park.

It was another match which showed how crazy our season has been. I said before the match that it wouldn’t have surprised me if we nicked the game given some of our results against the better sides this season. And boy did we. It felt like Stockport were banging the door down for the entire first half, but we held firm and after a slick bit of skill from Tom Knowles (#DFILWF) he finished brilliantly just before half time. His goal was the springboard which seemed to galvanise the Glovers and Charlie Lee’s side grew in confidence as the match progressed.

It was amazing to finally see a Josh Neufville goal at Huish Park. A quick break and our lockdown hero was in behind the Stockport defence. He showed

the calmness of a seasoned striker and coolly sent Hinchcliffe the wrong way to send those that were at Huish Park wild. He’s had to play a different game than he did last season. Yesterday he was starved of the ball at points and really had to make the most of his own possession and when it mattered he made it count.

We didn’t let Stockport’s changes count. Dave Challinor made a double substitution at half time and before Crankshaw and Hippolyte has a chance to settle into the game and make a difference, we were 2-0 up. Another change followed swiftly and although Hippolyte scored against his old club, the red card of Will Collar two minutes later meant they had another on-pitch change to make. It felt like Stockport never managed to get going as cohesively in the second half as they did in the first, and we managed to deal with most of their threat comfortably.

Stockport’s own supporters took their side’s momentum. After Hippolyte’s goal a blue smoke bomb was thrown into Grant Smith’s six yard box. County players had swiftly grabbed the ball to force a quick restart, but their momentum was totally lost as a stewards had to wait for the smoke bomb to extinguish before they could safely remove it. Collar’s deserved red card for a dangerously high foot on Dale Gorman shortly after the delay just exacerbated things for County’s evidently frustrated players. Dave Challinor thought the same:

Max Hunt stepped back in supremely. You wouldn’t have known it was Hunt’s first game back after months out injured. The centre back was dominant against the National League’s lethal pairing of Paddy Madden and Scott Quigley. The deadly duo had moments of freedom in the first half, but Hunt was a man mountain, winning everything in the air and throwing himself in front of efforts at goal. His confidence shone through and was clear to see when he executed a textbook Cryuff turn on the halfway line before getting Yeovil on the attack. It was the kind of performance from Hunt which hammered home the urgent need to secure the futures of some of these players.

Match Report

Yeovil Town completed a double over champions elect Stockport County as goals from Tom Knowles and Josh Neufville earned Charlie Lee his first win as caretaker manager.

Having won in Greater Manchester back in September, the visitors arrived in Somerset having lost just once in the league since mid-December but came up against a Yeovil side in inspired form.

Having had to show enormous concentration against a free-flowing Stockport side, Knowles opened the scoring on 39 minutes and then, as the visitors adapted to a change of formation at the break, Neufville doubled the advantage.

Ex-Yeovil winger Myles Hippolyte pulled one back in the second half only for The Hatters to have midfielder Will Collar red carded for high tackle on Dale Gorman soon after.

Here’s the story of the afternoon………..

First half

Charlie Lee, assisted for the first time by his new caretaker assistant Jody Brown, made two changes with Max Hunt returning in the heart of defence in place of Ben Barclay, who was unavailable against his parent club, and Josh Neufville coming in for Charlie Wakefield, who was missing through illness.

The opening chance of the match came from the right side with a cross finding the familiar face in Stockport striker (and former Huish Park favourite) Paddy Madden at the back post. His header was well stopped by Grant Smith in the hosts’ goal.

Six minutes later, Will Collar‘s superb cross-field ball found wing back Sam Minihan found himself in pace and got in behind Morgan Williams and found Madden on the edge of the box, but his shot went over. Thanks, Paddy, we appreciate it.

The opening 20 minutes saw possession almost entirely dominated by the visitors with the home side doing well to hold their shape.

On 33 minutes, Luke Wilkinson had a free-kick easily saved by Ben Hinchcliffe in the Stockport goal, but two minutes later Neufville had a strong penalty shout having been dragged down in the box.

Put that in the ‘seen them given’ category, but the ball then broke to Reid who slipped at the crucial moment with the goal at his mercy.

That seemed to sting the visitors who upped the ante and a venomous free-kick struck by Ryan Rydel dipped over the wall and was well turned over by Smith.

Then, just when you thought it was the visitors who were more likely to take the lead, Yeovil took the lead and it was no surprise that it was Tom KNOWLES who got it.

If there’s one thing which has been unquestionable from this team, it is the forward’s incredible commitment and after 43 minutes be burst down  the right, he cut inside, the Stockport defenders let him run and he finished it brilliantly. Well, that wasn’t in the script.

Despite being ahead, when the fourth official’s board went up to indicate three minutes of injury time, chants of “We want Priestnall Out!” were clearly heard around Huish Park. The chairman was in attendance for the first time since the televised FA Cup match with AFC Bournemouth back in January.

Half time: Yeovil Town 1 Stockport County 0

Second Half

Stockport manager Dave Challinor made his intentions perfectly clear from the start of the second period introduction ex-Glovers’ winger Myles Hippolyte and Ollie Crankshaw at the break.

The changes saw a reorganisation in formation by the visitors which they did not immediately settle in to and, with ten minutes of the second half gone, it was this disorganisation in midfield that led to Yeovil doubling the lead.

Josh Neufville wheels away after scoring Yeovil’s second.

A great combination by combination by Lawson D’Ath and Dale Gorman sent Josh NEUFVILLE away and the Luton Town loanee ran through, holding off Minihan and coolly slotted home the second.

Challinor responded again with another change the of shape again as Connor Jennings came on for Scott Quigley after 58 minutes later. Seconds after, a teasing cross by Crankshaw was heading towards Jennings who was positioned to poke it home at the far post, only for Mark Little to get just enough on it.

Max Hunt, who played superbly on his return after injury, deflected a volleyed shot from Madden wide four minutes later.

But, after 70 minutes, Stockport halved the Glovers’ advantage. Another ball in from the right came to Madden who sliced his effort, but it broke nicely to Myles HIPPOLYTE and the former Glover came back to haunt his old employers.

A blue flare was lit and thrown from the away fans, leading to a delay and, when play did restart, the first action saw Stockport midfielder Will Collar was red carded for high foot challenge on Gorman. The Northern Irishman jumped for the ball and still managed to connect with the foot of his midfield opponent.

On 78 minutes, Neufville left his marker behind and was clear through on goal, but dragged his shot wide.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Stockport continued to press and as seven minutes of injury time were shown by the fourth official a half-volley from Hippolyte went just wide and then soon after Madden had the ball in the net. The ex-Glovers’ hero could not beat the offside flag.

As the sixth minute of stoppage time ticked over, there was incessant pressure from the visitors with corners from the box stopped by heroic defending and the game

In amongst all the madness at Yeovil Town this weekend, there’s a football match at Huish Park today with the visit of table topping Stockport County.

Charlie Wakefield misses out through illness meaning on loan forward Josh Neufville comes back in to the starting XI line up alongside Tom Knowles  either side of Reuben Reid in attack.

Middlesbrough loanee defender Jack Robinson returns to the substitutes’ bench, as does goalkeeper Max Evans following the departure of Olufela Olomola after he was recalled by Hartlepool United on Friday.

As expected, central defender Max Hunt, who has been named on the bench for the past two games, replaces Ben Barclay who cannot play against his parent club.

Yeovil Town: Grant Smith, Mark Little, Luke Wilkinson, Max Hunt, Morgan Williams, Lawson D’Ath, Dale Gorman, Jordan Barnett, Josh Neufville, Tom Knowles, Reuben Reid. Substitutes: Max Evans, Jack Robinson, Alex Bradley, Sonny Blu Lo-Everton, Adi Yussuf.

Stockport County: Hinchcliffe, Minihan, Hogan, Palmer, Cannon, Madden, Collar, Johnson, Rydel, Croasdale, Quigley. Substitutes: Ashby-Hammond, Jennings, Hippolyte, Crankshaw, Francis-Angol.

Mark Little has warned his younger Yeovil Town team-mates against letting themselves down after having a good season.

Mark Little. Picture courtesy of Mike Kunz.

The 33-year-old said that players were now playing for their futures with five National League matches remaining and many understood to be without contracts beyond the end of this season.

He said: “It’s important to me to put in a good performance and for all of us to put in a good performance

“So the owner, the scout or the new manager, they will be watching the players and it would be a shame for lads who have played so well to be letting themselves down.”

He was speaking ahead of the visit of league leaders Stockport County to Huish Park for the weekend as they look to move another step closer to the Football League.

The former Bristol City and Bolton Wanderers player said he believed the team has been doing enough to win matches, but failed to capitalise on the pressure they put on relegation battlers Aldershot Town and local rivals W*ymouth over the Easter period.

Little added: “I think it’s down to experience. On Monday, I had a sense of urgency to go and get the goal but then seeing players around me who do not have that experience not having the urgency to do it.

“If I need to do something myself, I can go and do it but ushering other players to do it, it is difficult, and I do feel it is part of my job (as an experienced player) to do that.

“The two games we played over the Easter period, those two players are playing for their lives. Sorry, W*ymouth are gone [not quite, Mark, but well done for the sentiment!] but they are scrapping as it’s a derby and this weekend Stockport are up for promotion.

!It’s all about personal pride, pride in your performance, representing the club and the fans properly because they gave us unbelievable support on Easter Monday. It is about putting in a performance for them.

Over the Easter period, Yeovil Town struggled against two sides – Aldershot Town and W*ymouth – who were in in poor runs of form.

They will have no such problems against a Stockport County side who have lost just twice since the middle of December and in the process picked up 22 victories.

In an epic exercise of clutching at straws, you could look at it that the Hatters have lost their last two matches away from Edgeley Park, a 2-0 defeat in the FA Trophy at fellow big spenders Wrexham and then a Good Friday loss at Grimsby Town where they played the final 55 minutes with ten men.

Make no mistake, this is a very different team to the one which Yeovil turned over 3-0 at Edgeley Park. That performance was played under former boss Simon Rusk and since he was replaced by Dave Challinor in November, Stockport have looked unstoppable.

Their expensively assembled squad boast a frightening array of talent with no less than ex-Glovers’ hero Paddy Madden and Scott Quigley, top scorer for Barrow when they won this division two seasons ago, up front and another former Huish Park favourite Courtney Duffus unable to even make the bench.

They have added to an already strong squad with the signings of players including winger Myles Hippolyte, who played for Yeovil in the 2019-20 season.

Defensively they look strong as well having kept clean sheets in five of their last six games with captain Liam Hogan and Ash Palmer, who saw red in the reverse fixture in September, looking solid.

So, yeah, nothing to worry about.

FROM THE MANAGER

Boss Dave Challinor has targeted winning four wins out of their remaining six National League game to clinch the title and is aiming for one of them at the weekend.

Speaking after last weekend’s 1-0 win over Solihull Moors, he said: “Four wins is unassailable out of six. I’ll not say I will take three because that would not be enough – although I would take three if one of them with Wrexham because then they can’t catch us.

“We’ve just got to focus on Yeovil which is a tough place to go against a team which still has pride to play for in front of their own fans.

“They won’t want to lose the game so we have to make sure we are right and we do what we can to win the match.”

TEAM NEWS

Winger Antoni Sarcevic will be the biggest absentee for Stockport County this weekend.

The Manchester-born player joined on a free transfer in October after falling out with Bolton Wanderers manager Ian Evatt and has been a regular starter since arriving.

He is serving the second game of a three-match suspension for a red card picked up in the Good Friday defeat at Grimsby Town.

Defender Liam Hogan went off injured with a “contact injury” against Solihull Moors last weekend, but boss Dave Challinor expected his skipper to be available.

A FOOT IN BOTH CAMPS

If you don’t know the answer to this one – where have you been?! Mr Patrick Madden is a centre forward presently earning his trade at Stockport, having written his name in to footballing folklore in South Somerset.

24 goals in 42 games for the Glovers on the way to promotion to the Championship in the 2012-13 season – including a decent hit in the play-off final at Wembley that year – guarantee the Irishman a good reception from the home faithful. Just please don’t score, Paddy.

Another recent addition to the ranks at Edgeley Park is Myles Hippolyte. The winger joined from League Two (soon to be National League) outfit Scunthorpe United at the end of January and has made 13 appearances, scoring three goals including two in his last four. He was part of Darren Sarll’s first squad in 2019-20, making 34 appearances before moving to Scunthorpe.

Another member of the 19-20 squad, Courtney Duffus is another ex-Glover in the visitors’ squad having joined on loan from Morecambe, but such is the strength of the Hatters’ frontline that he is yet to make an appearance.

Winger Ben Whitfield, who joined from Torquay United in the summer, is missing through injury. He played more than 40 times in the 2016-17.

Then, in no particular order, other players who have a foot in both camps include:

  • Matt Warburton
  • Phil Jevons
  • David Poole
  • Andy Welsh
  • Joe Edwards

There’s probably more, but that’s enough to be getting on with.

Charlie Lee has said his Yeovil Town side are ready to take on the challenge of facing National League leaders Stockport County at Huish Park on Saturday.

The Hatters’ defeat at Grimsby Town on Good Friday was the first they have lost in league action since a loss at Torquay United on December 11, but they managed to bounce back with a 1-0 win over Solihull Moors on Easter Monday, thanks to a late goal from ex-Glovers’ striker, Paddy Madden.

Charlie Lee speaks to the BBC ? YTFC

Speaking about this weekend’s opponents, Lee said: “They are a Football League team in waiting they are the strongest team in the division, best players, biggest budget and they are on an incredible run.

It’s going to be a very tough game but we feel like we can give them a tough game and we are confident going in to Saturday.

In such a rich vein of form, Stockport are strong favourites for the win and will be looking to revenge Yeovil’s 3-0 win at Edgeley Park back in September which was part of the pre-season title favourites’ poor start to the campaign.

Since then they replaced boss Simon Rusk with Hartlepool United’s Dave Challinor and the turnaround has been astonishing.

Lee said: “When you have had good performances and results against a team before, you can always take positives but really we know how strong a team they are.

We have to be up for the battle and, other than the (2-0 defeat to) Aldershot (on Good Friday) when we felt we let ourselves down, the players have been brilliant.”

Central defender Max Hunt. Picture courtesy of Mike Kunz.

Ben Barclay, the central defender on loan from Stockport, will be unavailable against his parent club, but Max Hunt has returned to the squad after more than three months out.

He has been out since the 2-1 defeat at Southend United in mid-January having picked up an ankle injury but has been named on the substitutes’ bench for the two games over Easter.

Lee said: “It is good to have Hunty available. He’s been fully training for the last two weeks and he’s been involved in the last two squads, so he is a natural replacement.

“There are other things we can do and we are looking at for the weekend, but it is good to have Hunty fit and ready to play.”

The caretaker boss was asked about the seemingly never-ending soap opera at Huish Park with the latest chapter being an investigation in to an unnamed member of coaching staff following allegations of using discriminatory language against Aldershot Town players.

It comes on top of endless talks of a possible takeover of the club, the absence of chairman Scott Priestnall, the surprise departure of manager Darren Sarll to rivals Woking – to name but a few.

Lee said: “Everything has an effect, but its a great group of people working in the club. Ever since last year, we have had to deal with a lot and had to deal with it with unbelievable desire.

“They just want to keep improving and that’s what they will keep doing and I will be relying on the experienced boys to help me out.

“There’s no time for excuses when you play for Yeovil and that is the way it will be as long as I am in charge.

Summary

A complete performance saw Yeovil Town pull off the result of the as they cruised to a 3-0 win at one of the National League’s promotion favourites Stockport County.

Charlie Wakefield opened the scoring after 26 minutes before a second half penalty from Joe Quigley which led to the dismissal of defender Ash Palmer and a late third from substitute Adi Yussuf sealed the victory.

The performance was unquestionably the Glovers’ best of the season so far and one manager Darren Sarll described as “right up there” in the best during his time in charge.

It can be said that the expensively assembled Stockport side, boasting the likes of Paddy MaddenBen WhitfieldJohn Rooney and last season’s top-scorer Alex Reid, did not look like a side worthy of their lofty credentials, credit must go to the visitors for nullifying their hosts.

Here’s how David Coates saw it from the away end…..

FIRST HALF

For the second weekend in a row, Darren Sarll was able to named an unchanged starting XI as he went with the same team that won 1-0 at home to FC Halifax Town seven days earlier.

We had been told to expect a Stockport side which dominated possession but did very little with it and that was how it proved to be with nothing that threatened the visitors’ back four of Moss, Hunt, Wilkinson and Barnett.

The game’s first meaningful opportunity fell to Wakefield who linked up with Sonny Blu Lo-Everton who was playing in the number 10 role behind Quigley for the third consecutive match. That set Wakefield away but his effort was turned around the post by Ben Hinchcliffe in the Stockport goal.

Following a performance which rather passed him by against Halifax, this was a very different Lo-Everton with the Watford loanee added a little more robustness to his undoubted quality on the ball.

Perhaps with opponents more akin to himself, he was not subjected to the rough and tumble he may experience against less cultured midfielder, but there was plenty to like about his performance.

That sparked a spell of pressure with Madden, who found himself playing almost permanently in midfield looking for the ball in the first half, having to scramble a corner wide before Josh Staunton‘s header called Hinchcliffe back in to action.

So when WAKEFIELD open the scoring on 26 minutes, there was no doubt it was a well-deserved advantage. Strong play for Quigley saw him find Lo-Everton whose lovely side-footed pass picked out Wakefield arriving on the right of the area to smash a superb angled drive in to the far corner.

Dale Gorman forced a flying stop out of Hinchliffe soon after before Stockport boss Simon Rusk made a tactical change to try with Tom Walker replacing Arjan Raikhy, who joined from Premier League Aston Villa where in the summer where he was a highly-rated member of the academy.

The move was testament to the tactics of Rusk’s opposite number whose tactics driven by the disciplined performances of Staunton and Gorman nullified their expensively-assembled opponents.

Half-time: Stockport County 0 Yeovil Town 1

SECOND HALF

With expectation almost palpable around Edgeley Park, it was no surprise when the home side came out of for the second half strongly.
But, for their initial pressure, a header wide by last season’s top-scorer Alex Reid was all Stockport had to show for it.
Meanwhile, down the other end a long ball forward found Tom Knowles the wrong side of his marker Ash Palmer who dragged him to the ground, gifting Yeovil a penalty and receiving a red card for his troubles.
Who else but Joe QUIGLEY stepped up to send Hinchcliffe the wrong way from the penalty for his fifth goal in the club’s opening five games after 53 minutes.
Seven minutes later the big frontman could had added to his tally but pulled his shot wide. Cue the departure of some home supporters and audible dissention amongst the County faithful – we’d been told there might be.
Kenan Dünnwald-Turan, a loan signing from Scunthorpe United in the week, replaced Reid who’d spent much of his afternoon in Max Hunt’s back pocket, and soon after the German was bearing down on Grant Smith’s goal – only to drag his shot wide.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, the hosts still saw plenty of the ball yet did little with it until the 79th minute when a lapse by Jordan Barnett released Madden whose shot was turned away by Smith – arguably the only meaningful stop the keeper was forced in to all afternoon.
It was left to Adi YUSSUF to complete the scoring. Pressure from Staunton in midfielder forced the hosts in to an error which the striker, who had just come on as a substitute for Lo-Everton, latched on to and coolly slotted away his third.

As he and his team-mates celebrated in front of the 200 travelling supporters, the boos rang out around Edgeley Park.

Full time: Stockport County 0 Yeovil Town 3

Darren Sarll said his side’s performance in a 3-0 win at Stockport County was “right up there” during his time at the club.

The Yeovil Town boss heaped praised midfielders Dale Gorman and Josh Staunton and defender Max Hunt for their performances ay Edgeley Park.

Goals from Charlie Wakefield, a penalty from Joe Quigley and a late third from substitute Adi Yussuf wrapped up a comfortable win.

Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Sheridan Robins after the game, the manager said: “I thought we were very good first half, tactically we were excellent and (Dale) Gorman and (Josh) Staunton orchestrated that performance, they were brilliant in midfield.

“We certainly deserved to be 1-0 to the good (at half-time) and we had a couple of good moments before that.

“Charlie (Wakefield) has tried to improve (the goal-scoring) part of his game in the past couple of weeks and then it was about ensuring our mentality was not to hold on for dear life.

“We were more like ‘let’s go and play again’ whilst being aware of tactical situations but let’s try and get another goal.

Of Hunt’s performance, the boss added: “I thought he was incredible. I think at the end of last year a couple of teams will have looked at Max and thought ‘maybe we can get some change out of him here.’

“But today he was fearless, he was confident and his heading from set plays was amazing.

Dale Gorman.

Midfielder Dale Gorman says the performance in a 3-0 win away at Stockport County was down to the structure which has been drilled in to the team by its coaching staff.

The Northern Irishman, who joined from Glentoran in the summer, was at the heart of the performance against an expensively-assembled opposition, but insisted that he believes his team-mates can put in performances against any side.

Speaking to BBC Somerset reporter Sheridan Robins after the game, he said: “I don’t think it matters who we were playing today, I think we won today because we were well-structured and everything we learnt (in training) in the week manifested itself well.

“My form comes from the staff, it is drilled in to us every day and when you win like we have today it makes it that bit sweeter.

“The staff have been drilling us since Day One, we look organised, we look fit and it is starting to show now game by game.

“We know the calibre of player that Stockport has, but it is about players like me and a few of the other players using our experience. I don’t think that fazed any of us and today we were bang on it.

“We showed today how good we are and how together we are and it is good to get another win.”

Gorman has struck up an impressive relationship with Josh Staunton in the middle of the park and said that his team-mates had made his integration in to the squad an easy one.

He said: “The changing room is one of the easiest I have walked in to, sometimes that can be quite tough for a player.

“But we have some good players and some experienced players and when you join all that together, you have seen what we can do as a team today.”

Yeovil Town  name an unchanged starting XI for the second consecutive match as they prepare to take on Stockport County at Edgeley Park (3pm kick-off)

The same team, including substitutes, is the same as the one which beat FC Halifax Town last weekend.

For the home side, former Glovers Paddy Madden and Ben Whitfield are named in the starting XI.
