Notts County and Hartlepool United are standing in the way of a Johnson-versus-Madden head-to-head in the National League play-off final.

A brace from striker Rhys Oates earned Hartlepool a 3-2 win over Bromley in the play-off quarter finals on Sunday to set up a semi-final against Paddy Madden’s Stockport County next Sunday.

Ex-Yeovil Town striker Courtney Duffus was missing from the Bromley side, seemingly out of favour with new Ravens’ boss, Andy Woodman, but there was a second half appearance for Byron Webster.

In the other quarter-final, Notts County defender scored a later winner to settle an enthralling 3-2 win over Chesterfield, whose manager James Rowe was not bitter about the defeat and instead blamed the referee in his post-match interview,

Notts face Gary Johnson‘s Torquay in the first semi-final next Saturday, with the final taking place at the home of football, Bristol City’s Ashton Gate, the following weekend,

The 2020/21 Vanarama National League has come to a conclusion, a topsy turvy season with Covid Stops, No Fans in the grounds and not one but two sides not completing the season (of course, one of them, Macclesfield, never started).

But after 42 games, the table has been finalised and we now know the end of season play of schedule.

Four sides, Notts County, Hartlepool, Bromley and Chesterfield will play off in eliminators to set up semi-finals vs either Torquay or Stockport.

The final will take place at (checks notes) Ashton Gate, home of Bristol City on June 20th.

Best of luck to all those taking part, apart from Chesterfield.

Yeovil Town played their first ever Football League Play Off fixture on this day in 2007.

The Glovers welcomed two-time European Cup winners, Nottingham Forest to Huish Park for the first leg of the League One play off semi final.

Despite outplaying their counterparts Yeovil would succumb 2-0 in the end, thanks to a couple of penalties from Kris Commons and James Perch.

Nearly 9,000 supporters were in the ground for the game with the pictures beamed around the world on Sky Sports as well.

After the game, Forest were famously rumoured to be planning their trip to Wembley already with the players measured for suits and hotels all booked before the return leg at the City Ground.

… and we all know what happened on ‘that night on the side of the River Trent’, more on that on a later ‘On This Day’.
