Darren Sarll was happy with his Yeovil side’s ‘excellent’ performance as they sailed past Yate Town in FA Cup first round this afternoon.

Speaking to the BBC’s Sheridan Robins after the 5-0 win he praised the performance of his players and said he sees momentum  building in the team.

He said: “I thought their performance levels were very high, their training this week has been like a whole new level, really. We’re starting to find a little bit of momentum now and I thought some of the performances were excellent. I thought they dealt with the ball on quite a difficult pitch. We were very good, very good.

“The most important thing with this team, I keep saying it over and over again is, process, it’s progress, it’s time. And I just feel like we’re starting to really hit some form. When I was watching training this week I said to Terry (Skiverton), someone might get a bit of a slapping from us soon and today we started so fast, so athletically, so intense that would have been hard for a full time team to deal with.”

The Glovers started strongly in the first and second half and the manager indicated the quick openings are part of the plan.

“We’ve got a very small set of unique skills in our team and obviously the first one is athleticism. Some of them are very good athletically and we have to play at speed because they’re fast and there’s no point being fast and playing slowly.”

Yeovil Town will need to be “ruthless” to avoid becoming the victims of an FA Cup giant-killing this weekend, according to manager Darren Sarll.

The Glovers travel to a Yate Town side who are 38 places below them in the football pyramid in ninth place in the Southern League Premier Division South for the first round proper this weekend.

The Bluebells have won four of their last six games including a 5-2 league win over Salisbury City in midweek and a 1-0 win over National League whipping boys Dover Athletic in the last round.

Sarll said: “Yate deserve a lot of credit for their progress through this competition.

“They are in a rich vein of form, you can’t deny momentum at whatever level and they have qualities and it will be very important that we share our qualities with everyone on Saturday.

“We have to ensure we are robust, professional and very committed and ensure we get the job done, it will be about being ruthless and professional.

“It may not be a wonderfully smooth display but on these sort of games it is important we get the job done.”

The manager was in attendance for Yate’s 5-2 win over Salisbury City on Tuesday night and said he had picked up a lot of tips from “good friends” he and assistant manager Terry Skiverton have with knowledge of their opponents.

He added: “It’s a really big pitch, it looked in good condition on Tuesday night and it will give us a chance to pass it and we will have to pass it.

But, Sarll said the financial reward of making the second round of the competition would not be a factor for his players. The winners of Saturday’s tie will collect more than £22,000 in prize money.

The boss said: “The financial status is for the boardroom, that’s not for our changing room, so the most important thing is they focus on their current form.

“Working with this group of players it is more important to know we are doing okay and we need to keep improvement, but we are certainly not going backwards.

Darren Sarll was full of praise for his defence following Yeovil Town’s 0-0 draw on the road at Solihull.

In a game of two-red cards, the Glovers held on to valuable point at the 5th placed side.

Speaking to BBC’s Sheridan Robins, Sarll said: “I thought we defended very well and what’s really pleasing, and something that I’ve not really spoken about is that I think we’ve probably got the fourth best defensive record in our division (it’s actually the third!). And I don’t think we would associate that with our recent run of results, but I thought that [the result] was a really good point.”

Max Hunt was justly dismissed for a professional foul in the 70th minute and the manager was pleased with his makeshift back four and how they defended in the closing stages.

He said: “When you looked at the make up of the back four in that last 10-15 minutes, I was really pleased for those young men.”

When asked about the status of Dan Moss and Jack Robinson’s loan deals, Sarll commented that “Robinson is done [signed] until January” and that Moss will be going “absolutely nowhere.”

Sarll also provided an update on Luke Wilkinson, who he had suggested on Thursday could return for the Solihull fixture. He said: “Luke tried on Thursday and it was too soon. So we put it to bed yesterday and left him out of everything. He’s going to have to get a wiggle on now, bless him Luke, or we’re going to have to bring someone else in I think.”

Yeovil Town boss Darren Sarll believes top-scorer Joe Quigley is in “the form of his life” this season.

But, the manager said the six-goal striker is showing signs of fatigue having started the opening 12 matches of the season.

Quigley was dropped to the bench for the midweek win over Woking appearing as a 62nd-minute substitute for Adi Yussuf in the 2-0 win.

The manager said: “Joe’s ascent to where he is now is brilliant, but I can see a fatigue in Joe where he has had to carry his department in this team.

“He has had to lead the line and be the experienced head and I can see a fatigue I have never seen before.

“Saturday at Grimsby is the first time I have seen that. He has been fabulous, but he will need rest and recuperation like the rest of them will.

“I am telling him ‘you are my guy’ and you’ve got to play every minute of every game, and he’s now breaking down new walls in how to play more minutes.

The manager added that Quigley had scored more goals in green-and-white than for the rest of the clubs he has played for in his career – which is almost right.

Quigley has scored 24 goals for 12 different clubs before arriving at Yeovil, though he had two loans spells at both Gillingham and Woking, making it 14 spells at different clubs.

However, his 18 goals in his 51 appearances for Yeovil is the most goals he has scored for one club by a clear distance.

He did manage five goals in a nine-game loan spell at Woking in the 2015-16 season.

Reuben Reid is ahead of schedule in his recovery from a hamstring tear.

The Glovers’ striker has been missing since picking up the injury in a pre-season friendly at Weston-super-Mare and had been expected to be back in December.

Reuben ReidHowever, manager Darren Sarll said the former Exeter City and Cheltenham Town frontman had been in the dressing room throughout the season bringing an experienced voice for his side’s younger players.

Speaking ahead of the weekend’s trip to Solihull Moors, the boss said: “He is ahead of schedule and we are very positive about him making an earlier comeback that we first thought.

“He is in the dressing room for all of the games and his contribution has been magnificent in all of the games, as has Mark’s (Little) and Luke Wilkinson’s.

“He’ll be a massive player when he comes back and he’s been a joy to work with.

Sarll said he received “a lot of warnings” about the 33-year-old before signing him last January, but described him as “a brilliant guy with a wonderful personality.”

The manager added: “No-one is this division or the one above is as good at keeping the ball as Reuben with his back to goal, so he’s been a big miss for us.

As mentioned after the midweek win over Woking, defender Luke Wilkinson is expected to be involved in the game against fifth-placed Solihull.

The manager also confirmed that defender Alex Bradley, who has not featured since coming on as an 86th minute substitute in the 1-1 draw with Altrincham, trained on Thursday along with Sonny Blu Lo-Everton who was rested for win over Woking.

All three are expected to be involved at the weekend.

Captain Luke Wilkinson could be back in contention for the weekend’s visit to Solihull Moors.

The centre-half has been missing since limping off after 28 minutes of the 2-0 home defeat to Chesterfield.

Speaking after the win over Woking on Tuesday night, manager Darren Sarll said: “I think Luke may make Saturday which would obviously be a huge boost to everyone including the average age.

Hopefully he can play some part, I’m not sure how long, that will be calculated based on Thursday and Friday’s training.

“But it would be a huge addition and coming back off a win does not feel so desperate to throw him back in.

“I thought (Max) Hunt and (Josh) Staunton in particular were fantastic tonight.

The boss also confirmed that Sonny Blu Lo-Everton missed out on the midweek win after picking up an injury against Grimsby Town at the weekend.

He also suggested that Yeovil would be interested in getting Lewis Simper back after he was recalled by Cambridge United ahead of the Woking match.

Asked about the loan midfielder, Sarll said: “It’s been stop-start (season for Lewis) and when you are in the flow of the season and someone has missed so many minutes, it is hard to get them involved.

Sonny Blu (Lo-Everton) has stepped in to those shoes and did very well, but best of luck to Lewis.

“He would love to come back, we would love to have him back if possible and maybe carry on that journey together.”

The 20-year-old, who joined on a season-long loan in July, was recalled due to a spate of injuries and suspensions at his parent club.

He was an unused substitute in Cambridge’s 1-1 draw at Doncaster Rovers on Tuesday night.

Yeovil Town manager, Darren Sarll spoke to BBC Somerset’s Sheridan Robins following the Glovers’ 2-0 win over Woking on Tuesday night and was quick to heap praise on his side.

“They deserve a lot of praise, the players, their energy, their resilience to reproduce a similar performance to Saturday (vs Grimsby) was excellent.”

“I loved their energy and their enthusiasm to the game, the most pleasing thing to me was it stretched longer than just a half, we’ve been very guilty of only really competing for maybe half the game, but that stretched to 75, 80 minutes tonight”

Goals from Charlie Wakefield early in the first half and Tom Knowles early in the second secured the points, something Sarll found especially pleasing.

“To start the second half in that form and in that vein was excellent, these players get a massive feed off the crowd and the vibe tonight in the ground was great, really great and I think they really thrived off of that”

“I’m really please young Tom (Knowles) got his goal tonight… I think he needs to add some consistency, the thing with Tom is that the expectation on him now is a lot higher than it was last year… he was very energetic tonight, very vibrant and much more of a goal threat.”

Darren Sarll will not be the next Carlisle United manager (that is assuming he ever was going to be) after the League Two strugglers appointed ex-Bristol City boss Keith Millen.

The Yeovil Town manager was the favourite for the job with a couple of national bookmakers’ on Monday evening, and was still favourite with BetVictor and 5/1 third favourite with SkyBet this morning.

But, as we did warn that the likelihood was this was just bookies making stuff up to keep things interesting, and it appears it was exactly that.

Millen has signed an 18-month contract with the Cumbrians who are third from bottom of League Two after 14 matches.

Two national bookmakers have Yeovil Town manager Darren Sarll among the favourites at League Two side Carlisle United.

SkyBet have the Glovers’ boss as a 2/1 favourite to replace Chris Beech who was sacked with the club in the division’s relegation zone.

BetVictor are also offering 6/4 on Sarll to take over at Brunton Park, although other outlets do not have him anywhere near the running.

BetVictor are offering odds of 6/4 on Darren Sarll to be the next manager at Carlisle United.

‘Next Permanent Manager’ markets are notoriously volatile and it isn’t always based on the most reliable sources.

Other betting companies, including William Hill, don’t have Sarll listed at all with Keith Hill listed as their odds-on favourite.

A little investigative work with some of our northern contacts would suggest that this is probably little more than a couple of speculative punts from bookmakers.

What we can confirm is that manager took charge of training at Huish Park on Monday ahead of tomorrow night’s National League fixture at home to Woking.

Yeovil Town manager Darren Sarll talks to BBC Radio Somerset

Darren Sarll spoke to BBC Somerset following the Glovers’ 2-0 defeat against Grimsby, an eighth consecutive game without a win.

“I thought we were excellent, I’ve just said to them, I dont want them to think playing well, and not winning is ok, but, when you start a game and come to good football club, like this, and you know there’s going to be a big crowd, with really clear instructions to be brave, pass the ball – they dont expect us to come and pass the ball – let’s get on the ball and pass, and I thought we were very good, I thought we were the better side in both halves”

“I thought we worked the goal more, some of our – obviously we all know we are short of a centre forward, that’s going to score or bundle things in or force things in, like  a (Rhys) Murphy type, clever with his finishing”

“I thought Charlie (Wakefield) was a threat, Joe (Quigley) looked a threat, but tired very quickly, and it was a good game for Sonny (Blu Lo-Everton) to be in for his learning, but I would say he’d have to do better next time”

Grimsby’s first goal came from the Penalty spot after a spell of sustained pressure from the hosts, it’s a goal that could have been prevented according the gaffer.

“It was four or five mistakes, the goalkeeper’s kick was one, of course and then we didn’t deal with that kick, in midfield, didn’t deal with that, and then the winger comes rolling in off the side and we switch off, but to come here and give that opportunity away – and only that opportunity away – is testament to our performance”

Despite three changes, Sarll was frustrated that the game didn’t change in the Glovers’ favour, however there was praise for the replacement’s efforts and endeavour.

“Three attacking players, not sure how any of them affected the goal… all of them have got great energy, brilliant attitude, they come on and they try their absolute best. Giles Coke comes on for Grimsby and has more Football League experience than the starting eleven – on his own”

“I was really impressed with every player’s attitude today, I was really impressed with their motivation, courage to take the ball, I like what (Jack) Robinson and (Jordan) Barnett are doing at the moment – I think they are fantastic together, but we build – but we know we have to come out all guns blazing on Tuesday (vs Woking)”

Darren Sarll also confirmed that Exeter loanee Ben Seymour was missing after a delayed result from a COVID PCR test, but said he would be available for selection on Tuesday.
