Lewis Simper has been recalled by his parent club Cambridge United after the League Two club suffered a number of injuries.

The 20-year-old joined on a season-long loan spell, but made just two competitive appearances having suffered with COVID-19 and a leg injury since arriving.

In a statement issued just hours before the home match with Woking, the club said: “Yeovil Town can confirm the Lewis Simper has been recalled from his loan spell by Cambridge United.

“Due to a number of injuries at his parent club, the midfielder now returns with immediate effect.

Lewis Simper during a spell at Concord Rangers last season – we never even had him long enough to get a picture of him in green-and-white!

“The club would like to thank Lewis for his efforts during his time in Somerset and wish him all the best for the future.

The final line of the statement gives the impression that is the last we have seen of Simper, and Cambridge boss, Mark Bonner, spoke at the weekend about how he did not want to bring players back for just one game.

The Us have only one recognised central midfield player, Jensen Weir, available for their League One fixture against Doncaster Rovers tonight, sparking the recall.

Simper appeared off the substitutes’ bench after 84 minutes of last weekend’s 2-0 defeat at Grimsby Town and came on for the final ten minutes of extra time in the FA Cup replay win at W*ymouth, but has otherwise failed to feature.

Loan midfielder Lewis Simper should be back in training with Yeovil Town next week, according to Cambridge United first team coach Mark Bonner.

The Us’ boss confirmed the midfielder, who signed on a season-long loan in July, has picked up an injury after being one of a number of Glovers’ players who suffered COVID-19.

Speaking after his side’s EFL Trophy win over Tottenham Hotspur Under-21s on Tuesday night, Bonner said: “(Lewis) had COVID and he was off for a while with that, then he came back from COVID and picked up an injury which is quite common at the moment with people working too hard after 10 days of nothing.

“He had a small problem with knee so he is back in with us at the moment for treatment and rehab, so he trained on Monday and Tuesday and will train Thursday and Friday and be back with Yeovil next week.

“Hopefully he will be back in their squad for the following week.

A big thankyou to Alex Jones of Prost International for asking the question on our behalf.
